The curriculum looks nice. :) Although this might be a bit long for one session. We could split it up into two.

Looks very good. I will have Sahlaa or Ni'Saba there so I can perhaps teach the class in the future!

Looking good. Need any help?

Anything Ive left out? Please add suggestions, anyone to be included.

Next I will expand on each topic the best I can or if someone else would like to do that, that would be awesome. Especially Etiquette, & Character Development, the rest are kind of self explanatory

Etiquette and Character Development something I'm really passionate about. To me, Role Play is all about telling the story of your character through his actions, rather then what he tells. I am huge with character development (3 page write up of Qa'han's backstory, plus another page on Gnarlus (Yes, I'm going to be turning him into his own character, rather then a Disguise. I like him to much)

then yes please Qa'han if you have the time please write a post on one or each of those subjects :D I am new to RP relatively although I have done two years at a drama academy and worked extensively in the theatre as an actor/director I really would like to hear from other people. So we cover as much as the important basics as possible.

:D

Also we are looking for teachers

I don't think we need a pop quiz. It's cheesy in the non-Sheogorath way IMO. The rest looks great.

I would add:
Engaging others how-to.
RP actions against others & combat how-to.
Grammar importance.
Response time. ( MMO RP is not the same as others. If you can't type quickly, post just what is needed so people don't walk away from you or ignore you.)

I think we can fit it all in to an hour and let everyone start to RP toward the end.

Posting here for the list.

Pet Peeves:
Grammar, I'm all about grammar when it comes to RP that involves typing. The Difference between placing a comma here or a pause here gives hints to what the character is actually saying. Since things like tone of voice and Sarcasm are completely lost on a text based communication unless you specifically make it known.

Decent emotes, it's not that I think everyone should write an emote that is atleast five sentences long as I myself sometimes do one line emotes. But when you RP try and make it look good, there are people who will go all out in the terms of description of the actions and there are people who are good with the bare minimum. If it comes down to something like getting into an RP fight with another RPer, then communication is -key- in order to avoid them accidentally miss-reading what you were trying to say in your emote.

God moding or assumed success. Anyone who has RP'd in a situation where combat is involved atleast has a hint of what god moding is.

*Kyranta stabs you in the face.*

Make every action in your RP an 'attempt', while you might think he simply can't avoid it, the common courtesy in RP is to attempt your actions instead of dishing them out like a God.

*Kyranta attempts to stab you in the face.*

And don't ask me why the face...sometimes I just don't like faces.

Knowing when to take a hit. This is mainly for RP fights. Sure you can be a badass sword wielder or a shocks-all mage, but even thr greatest heroes in nearly any story have taken hits. Moderate, when you're engaged with another player make sure you arn't dodging this and blocking that while sidestepping over there. Take a hit. More often then not the other player will return the favor and the experience will be much better. Somthing I feel I should mention...when I say take a hit I don't mean have your character head-butt a warhammer. Glancing blows, cuts, scratches, armor hits, being off-balance, etc. Those count as taking the hit.

Feel free to comment as you will, as all of this is my -opinion- on RP and not something I write down on a stone tablet and proclaim as law.

That is good Kyranta - something I have never thought personally of before reading that, I will remember that for my own RP :)

Grammar & spelling I am more lenient with because I would not want to exclude someone because of their academic skills - that is just me.

Omg, God Modding pisses me right the frig off. "Your character is now Asleep, Unconscious, bound, and confused. Enjoy." I went on for 10 minutes in Officer Chat when that happened... it wasn't one of my finest moments...

Okay had my fun so now Ive edited for a more serious approach (yawns)

:)

I have added "Tolerance" to RP etiquette. From personal experience I have been put off joining RP groups in the past and sussed out this lot before joining because RPrs can be very anal about stuff : Lore, grammar, and general stuff.

While these things are important they should not ever spoil people's fun at either end. We dont want a bunch of doofus players emoting all over the place, and not even trying to spell or use correct grammar, or god-moding & meta-gaming etc (new terms I've learned this week  ) . On the other hand nobody wants to be lorded over and harassed, or critiqued excessively - whisper and gently correct or chat later with that person would be my suggestion.

No matter who they are (Leaders included) - if you have a problem with what they are doing, or have done please speak to them privately (in person). People are often coping with big things IRL and game to escape - me included. No one knows the stuff I deal with on a daily basis because I do not bring it to game with me, only close friends know my life.

I am saying this to say what you may think is a harmless comment, email, etc can have huge RL effects.

Calm communication is essential - ALWAYS! If you cannot be calm - wait until you can be, will save much drama.

That is why these RP Schools will be helpful, if people know in advance they will most likely avoid these things that irritate one another and avoid them if they understand.

I'd like to run the next one RP School, but I don't know whither I'd would like to focus on character background/character development, RP Etiquette, Elder Scroll Lore, or advance RP tactics. I'll post the Curriculums I had plan for each of the courses in this thread.

Character Background/Character Development
In the course Character Background/Character Development I'll use Qa'han Sandscales as an example. Here's the curriculum I'll use.
  1. While announcing the Lesson, encourage everyone to have a pen and paper for them. Notes are encouraged, but not required.
  2. Inform everyone that they will be making a fake character over the course of lesson which they will be using.
  3. Explain how a character background should dictate how your character reacts to situations.
  4. Explain that over time, your character's actions will tell your Backstory itself, rather then having to somehow force the issue to come up. Add a Occupation to their Character.
  5. Explain that a character should have a reason for being. A goal that they are working towards. Explain it can be as simple as Riches, survival, or honor, or as complicated finding the one who killed your mother. It should not be an easily achievable goal. Add a Simple Goal to their character.
  6. Explain a character must have a should has a set personality, though certain events can change it. Add a Personality Trait to their Character
  7. Explain how minor details such as uniquely shaped weapons, fears, and accent adds to a character, and opens more avenues to how your character can react. Add 2 Unique minor traits to your character.
  8. (Thanks for the Reminder Ri'sari) Explain flaws. No characters can be perfect. They have to have some weakness. These can be fears, personality traits like greed and rage etc. Add 2 Character Flaws
  9. Explain in minor detail Qa'han's Backstory, specifically that he was raised by Khajiit, his true scale color being black, and the loss of his Trading Caravan in Argonia.
  10. Explain how those three things have affected Qa'han in roleplaying.

  • Being raise by Khajiit, Qa'han has learn to treat himself as part of a whole, rather then as an individual. Thus it is shown through his Khajiiti Lip.
  • Qa'han had lost his Successful Caravan in the Blackmarsh, and ended up in Auridon, peddling skooma to make a living. He was extremely displeased by this, and as such, he sought to turn the Merchants Commune to his earn to make a profit.
  • Explain how minor details in a back story can used effectively. Explain that upon being betrayed by Ri'sari, Qa'han scraped all the dried sand off his scales and took the new identity of Rune-Tail, to make his enemies believe he was dead.

  • Ask everyone to pair up into groups of 3, give a scenario, and ask everyone to roleplay out a scene using the fake characters they created.

Character Development
  1. Explain that Character Development is how your character changes over time. This includes how your character feels towards other characters, your own character beliefs changing etc.
  2. Character should not be set in stone about their ways.

Don't forget one of the most important parts of a good character: Flaws! Every character needs exploitable flaws.

I would maybe just continue on from Ri'saari - those that have missed out can go to the next series. Maybe do a short re-cap, use a warm up exercise. or quiz people attending on what was learned in the lesson prior.

I think RP etiquette continued & Advanced RP, is a good place to start, followed by Character Development if you have time or save it for another day. I would keep Lore for another time also. Which makes the RP 101 stretch out into 4 weeks :)

I'm sorry Sylvaswift. I'm reading your post but I don't quite understand. Your first sentence indicates you like the Character Background idea, but after the quote you seem more inclined to the RP Etiquette and Advance RP taught by Ri'sari. Can you please clarify?

LOL sorry to be confusing - I like all the ideas but the flow seems to me at least to lean towards the course being delivered in the order I suggested. I love it all and will be there for all of it no matter what order you choose.

I did not mean Ri'saari do Advanced RP, you could but just to pick up where he left off this week in next week's session :) That is between you and him to decide.

Is that clearer? If not I will explain in person when you are on TS next. For a writer I suck at communication sometimes :dead:

Once this is done, it should probably be rewritten to be more reader friendly, or even summarized, and put in the main forums.

Also I think we should re-emphasize that character development should be a constantly ongoing process that reveals where the character has been, and leads to where they are going. The worst type of character IMO is the one that sets down their backstory, then stagnates, never growing away from it.

And yes, someplace without crocodiles!
