An open window in the darkened room allows the soft voice of the wind speak ever so softly as it passes the framing. Dilapidated window dressing occasionally snaps in defiance of the gusts and gently flutters back into its lifeless positions. A long candle dances in delight with each kiss of fresh air it gets. The light gives gentleness to a man’s long travel worn locks as he naps from exhaustion. A small gritted stone flanks him on one side; a small pile of glistening stones and a lumped polishing cloth flanks the other. His head has become a part of the table long before the nip of the night air found its way into the rented room. The only thing he’ll remember is…his dreams.
Born into middle class, Osiris’ teachings lead him into the art of restoration. His family afforded the higher institution of learning to procure the very best for their son. This included countless hours dealing in medicinal antidotes, magical mending and defenses that allow the living to remain living. However, one man, so intrigued Osiris with his skills that all else seemed very distant. You see, healing has its rewards, but understanding civilizations weakness for gems, trinkets and other ornamental gemology has its own financial benefit. One that Osiris plans on taking full advantage of.
Lazader Gustolf, an aged teacher of the Mending Arts spent countless hours honing his skills producing elegant gems for most of his 80 years. During Osiris’ younger years, the inquisitive youth would stay behind after his lessons and watch the man effortlessly turn rough gems into priceless works of art. All along the elder man would share life lesson after life lesson that the youngster knowing only a small portion of his talking’s would find a home within the young man’s mind. He knew Osiris was mesmerized with the transformation of rough cuts into perfectly edged stones. He also knew if only a portion of his life lessons would adhere to the youngster, his life’s path would be easier.
During the last few years of teachings, Lazander and Osiris become more than a teacher and a student, but more importantly became friends. The teachings at this time drifted more so into reviews that lasted less than a day. The rest of the day was dedicated to friendly banter over a small pile of rough cut gems in grave danger of becoming something special. Lazander handed down all his abilities to this young Breton, but in no way was he expecting Osiris to take those abilities and far exceed his own. He was becoming more and more aware the friendship was running low on time.
On a warm summers evening sadness gripped Lazander heavily. He sat with his arms crossed melting into thought as Osiris diligently worked a stone through its processes on the gritted stone. Osiris’ rhythm and perfect pressure on the fluid soaked stone was brilliant. The light sanded noise drifting throughout the chamber with a hypnotical resonance. He had taught Osiris all he knew; Osiris was more than capable of helping mend the sick and wounded, defend himself against all the world had to offer and supply a living for himself. Lazander slowly drummed his fingers on his skinny biceps for a bit longer and concluded it was time for Osiris to leave the embrace of the teacher, his parents and his township…We both knew it was time…
