Rumors:

Meriel was born on the Finger Bone Islands, the home of a Bosmer pirate clan off the Strident Coast of western Valenwood.

The Finger Bones are home to the descendants of Ayleid and Bosmer refugees from the First Era. They refer to themselves using the old Ayleid word for "wood elf," Boiche. Besides legitimate sea trade, the pirates are practiced raiders and hostage takers, and also still practice slavery on one of their islands. They have enjoyed a recent economic revival in the slave trade with Morrowind, as well as from privateering contracts with the Aldmeri Dominion.

Meriel was the sole survivor of the shipwrecked Meadful Nord on the Strid River just before the war in Cyrodiil broke out. Rescued by Dominion soldiers, she has been prowling through Cyrodiil looking to make her fortune.

Barefoot is Meriel's name aboard ship, her pirate nickname. She has probably forgotten the real one.

Background:

Meriel crewed on a slave ship until it wrecked off the coast of Morrowind, several decades ago. Rescued after months adrift by an Aldmeri trade ship, she chose service to a spy of the late king over the same king's justice. Zertretene took her to Anvil where she served many years as a subversive agent.

When Queen Ayrenn took the throne, Zertretene's name was exposed by an old rival and Meriel was forced to flee. Accused of stealing a pair of boots, Meriel faced certain death until the ship she was on hit an underwater barricade and wrecked, allowing her to escape.

Meriel knows Zertretene did not escape Anvil, but was seized by an unknown party. She has been searching for her former employer with great discretion ever since, even joining the Eyes of the Queen and gaining Ayrenn's confidence. However, no scent of Zertretene lingered in the new Aldmeri court, and so Meriel has begun to broaden her search.
