Due to his upbringing, Ruje does not talk much which often leads people to think him incapable of speech.
Ruje does not quite grasp the concept of “fun for the sake of fun”, often finding himself confused by childs' play and the target of many pranks when he lived among the villagers outside of Hammerfell.
Traeus' employers found it almost unnatural how quick and efficient his scouts were at surveying the areas ahead of the caravans.
Given the amount of time Ruje spends training by himself, along with the nature of his other skills, it's believed that Ruje may have been an assassin.
Despite being Khajiit, Ruje does in fact like dogs.
Background:
Ruje was born into slavery, having been purchased by a Breton named Traeus as a cub and given the name Daegon (he would later adopt the name Ruje) he has no idea who his parents are. Ruje was treated well, Traeus was a fair master who treated his slaves like family to a lesser extent, but he was still treated as a slave by outsiders. Most of Ruje's time growing up was spent in training, learning how to fight and hunt under the close watch of Kaj, one of Traeus' experienced khajiit scouts. Along with his Khajiit training, Ruje was turned into a werewolf as a cub so he could learn to better control the curse as he grew. Traeus even allowed Kaj to raise Ruje as a Khajiit, becoming a sort of father figure to Ruje and teaching Ruje everything he needed to know about survival and his role in Traeus' caravan escort. Despite having so little spare time Ruje still managed to fall for one of the female's from a nearby estate, a white/silver pelted Khajiit named Sylvia.
Due to his trade secrets and the nature of his employees, Traeus' company had no name, his services offered only to a few higher end merchants who would come calling by name to avoid unwanted attention. Ruje was one of several scouts who would scout ahead of caravans in order to detect ambushes or other possible hazards that might endanger the caravan. When Ruje was seventeen he, along with the entirety of Traeus' escorts, were sent on a mission to escort a caravan which was transporting some valuable relics. Ruje remembers very little of the ambush, he was on guard walking alongside one of the wagons when he took an arrow to the shoulder and back. A sharp pain in his leg brought Ruje to his knees and he was out before he could even draw his weapon.
When Ruje awoke he learned that the caravan had been overtaken; the scouts on duty were killed before they could warn the caravan of the ambush which claimed the lives of everyone Ruje had known except Traeus. The attack was believed to be an inside job due to the fact that the attackers knew about the scouts, the guards, and even which wagons to hit to eliminate the Khajiit guards who were hidden within the wagons in case of an ambush. Traeus was also injured in the attack, left without the use of his legs, and after losing all but one of his slaves in the ambush decided to retire rather than rebuild. Ruje became Traeus' caretaker for the next five years until Traeus fell ill, giving Ruje his freedom before passing.
Even with his new found freedom, Ruje could not claim any of Traeus' estate and had nothing to offer in exchange for Sylvia's freedom. Ruje left Hammerfell with only his worn clothes and a pouch of coins. Though free Ruje could not leave Sylvia behind and found himself living among a small khajiit village, led by Ri'San, set just beyond Hammerfell's borders, most of the inhabitants being escaped slaves who sought to free their captive kin. Ri'San and his clan survived mostly by hunting and robbing merchant caravans withing Hammerfell's borders. Ruje lived with Ri'San's clan for two years before he met Ma'Zha, a young Khajiit who came to live in the village when Ri'San brought him back after one of his caravan raids.
Ruje adopted Ma'Zha, taking the cub into his tutelage and training him as best he could, Ma'Zha showing little interest or capability in fighting, to hunt and scout. Ruje was on a hunting trip with several of his new clan when they were attacked, Ruje waking to find himself in Coldharbour.
