Rumors (what you do know about Katjya):
Katjya is an Imperial sell-sword, currently employed by Temvariana Aquan Vel on a long-term contract. The pair are travelling across the countryside for Temvariana (who hates the nickname Temmy, which Katjya gleefully uses outside her hearing) to learn about her new home.
Background (what your characters don't know (other than Temmy), but can find out!):
Katjya is a foundling, raised in an orphanage in Bravil. She figured out early that she would be responsible for her own safety, either by force or by guile. By the age of ten, Katjya was the head thug in the orphanage and had a small crew of a dozen other children that she oversaw who ran scams on the more easily intimidated merchants.
At the age of twelve all foundlings are given a minor stipend and a change of clothes and sent out from the orphanage to find their own way in the world. Most kids had already begun apprenticeships by that point in the various craft halls, but Katjya had no interest in menial labor. She wheedled her way into the Fighter’s Guild and began training, but they also broke her of her thuggish habits, frequently by showing her that she was neither the biggest nor the baddest in her new life.
She remained with the Fighter’s Guild even after she reached her majority and decided to make her way as a sell-sword. She still tithes to the Guild and remains in good standing, occasionally doing odd jobs for them in her travels. It was a posting within the Guild hall in Vulkhel Guard that bound her fate with Temvariana’s.
The Truth (what nobody knows and hopefully won’t find out):
Katjya’s family name is Silvertongue and she was raised by her parents in the nicer section of Bravil, on the smaller peninsula inside the city walls, just to the west of the castle. She is the oldest of three children, all daughters, although she has recently had word that her parents finally had the son they had been hoping for to carry on the family name. Her father taught her how to use a sword and bow and they spent many hours roaming the seedier portions of the city, learning how to position herself to come out ahead in any situation.
When she was twelve, a recruiter for the Imperial Legion came through town seeking candidates to bring to the Imperial City for training. Katjya was one of the first selected and a notation was placed in her file that she showed potential as an officer. The next decade was one of intensive training in the fighting of her choice: aggressive sword and board, with additional minor training in the bow. She rose quickly from the lower ranks of the legionnaires to the bottom of the Centurion ranks. Rumor had it that she would soon be promoted to praefectus cohortis and given command of her own cohort of legionnaires.
When she received the summons to the Imperial Legion headquarters, she assumed it was to have her promotion confirmed. Instead she was questioned heavily about her upbringing and what her father had taught her when she was living in Bravil. The Emperor had been hearing disturbing rumors of unrest throughout the other provinces and he was seeking special envoys to infiltrate the outer regions.
Due to the high crime rate and the skooma trade found in Bravil, Katjya was assigned to the Aldmeri Dominion. Although she had never partaken of the drug, she was familiar enough with it, and the khajiit who created it, to give her a point of reference with one of the races she would now have to interact with. The main assignment Katjya was given was to determine if this new alliance would be a threat to Imperial rule.
If she felt it was a danger to the Emperor, then she was to do whatever was necessary to destabilize the newly formed Dominion. The easiest way to do so would be to foment the distrust already rampant between the khajiit, the bosmer and the altmer.
If the Dominion’s new ruler, this Queen Ayrenn, did not have designs on ruling all of Tamriel and would in fact submit to the Emperor’s dictates, then Katjya Silvertongue was charged to aid the Queen in whatever ways she could. Little did Katjya know that the activities of her sell-sword persona and the journeying dunmer she was protecting would take her directly into the inner circle of the Queen herself.
Katjya found herself drawn to the high elf and appreciated the wit and intelligence that was evident the first time they spoke. While there were many in the Queen’s inner circle who had agendas of their own and who’s loyalty was far from assured, Ayrenn herself was an honorable woman and Katjya had no qualms in supporting her bid for rule. Especially as the Queen’s advisor, her sister-in-law and her brother have all proven they would be far from ideal choices as a replacement for Ayrenn. Time would tell if Ayrenn would prove to be a supporter of the Emperor or not, but for now, she was the better option than the chaos of pushing the Aldmeri Dominion into dissolution.
