The thief, Dar'Ahdnni
It is a quiet night in Eldenroot. The city slumbers as crickets chirp lazily in the distance, even the guards seem lethargic. Outside a medium sized, but well kept house a shadow seems to detach from the wall, moving with a will of it's own. A closer look reveals the shadow to be a lithe, young Khajiit woman, barely into her adult years. Dar'Ahdnni's cream colored fur seems to glow in the light as she moves between pools of darkness. A scar crosses her right eye, though the eye itself seems whole and functional. A costly price paid from a botched pick pocket attempt many years before. To her thinking, the scar was a constant admonishment towards caution. The patient thief is the live one.
As she often did, she let her mind wander as she moved closer to her goal.
A year after the scar was made, Ahdnni began taking snatch jobs for some fences she used. Typically minor things, necklaces here, the odd regretted contract there. Easy tasks worth decent enough coin. In a word, boring. And nothing was better at creating trouble for Ahdnni then boredom. This is what brought her to the wood elf city on such a night. That and a heated argument with her favorite fence "Bahz" concerning a higher paying job, something that would be 'a challenge' for a Khajiit of her skills. If only she knew then what would happen.
The task at it's heart was a simple one. Steal a small Idol, a relic of some long past battle. The challenge, the excitement for her came from the city she found herself in, and the compound she would need to infiltrate. fortunately, the city saw enough Khajiit travelers passing through that she would not stand out too badly. Unfortunately, the compound seemed to belong to the city guards, the idol, to their captain. Well, she had demanded a challenge.
She slowed her progress, pausing in some deep shadows as she looks over the compound in greater detail then she had the day before. Looking for anything that would change her choice of approach, new guard patrols, sentries that had grown lax in the night's quiet, anything to make her task easier. So far the only thing truly working for her in this task was the fact that the captain in possession of the idol was away from the city on some mission or another. All she would need to contend with, aside from a garrison of guards and roving sentries was the Bosmer house keeper the captain kept in employment. The old mer seemed as if one foot was already in the grave, and the other stood on uneven mental ground, to Ahdnni's estimation.
Spotting her chance to enter between patrols she quickly vaults the compound's wall sprinting swiftly to a nice shadow near the main barrack. Not the best of positions, but better than being out in the open. She quickly gets her bearings before moving quietly along the edge of the building towards her goal, her footfalls silent and breathing steady despite the pounding of her heart in her chest. After an eternity of moving, then waiting, then moving again, a trip that actually took only minutes, she finally reaches one of the windows she identified as her destination. Perfect in it's position out of the way of patrols, and well shadowed. Mor to the point it was darkened and had been the night before, clearly not having anyone coming and going from it often. With luck it was the captain's study, a good place for the idol to be housed, and a place that would be unused with the captain gone.
Using the tip of her dagger Ahdnni carefully slipped the latch to the window and climbed into the room beyond, careful to close the window enough to not draw attention before looking around. As she does she suppresses a curse of disappointment. It was a bedroom, worse, it was likely a guest room, devoid of any real personality, and certainly not the home of her prize. With a frown she glides quietly to the door, careful to test her footing before shifting her weight, avoiding and loose flooring that might squeak and give away her presence. The thought So much for a challenge. just has time to flit across her thoughts as a voice whispers from a darkened corner "What you are after was not worth the price you pay. My true master wants the idol to remain where it is." A soft glow spring up around the old housekeeper, a dark smile upon her face.
There was no light because she's blind! is the last thought the Khajiit woman, Dar'Ahdnni, has before the world falls away and pain becomes all she knows, for a very long time.
