Note: after debating which of my 3 main characters to select for a continuous RP, I brought the issue to the guildmates and the overwhelming majority voted for Hawke. So here we go :D This is my attempt to bring one of my favorite characters of all times into the Elder Scrolls universe, respecting the lore yet staying true to the essence of Bethany's character and reasons for her beliefs/actions.
Name: Bethany Hawke
Age: about 20
Date of Birth: 13th of Frostfall, 2E 563.
Birthplace: village of Loras, Island of Kirkwall, north of the coastal Rivenspire, High Rock
Arrival to Tamriel: Unknown, she appeared soon after the Soulburst.
Race: Breton
Gender: Female
Proficiency: Mage
Affinity: Fire element, closely followed by a decent skill in the Art of Healing
Skills: Apart from being a capable mage. Bethany is a skilled tailor and a decent carpenter
Character Traits: friendly, if a bit shy; humble, peaceable - tends to avoid violence for as much it will depend on her, caring; despite her magical prowess she's still somewhat unsure about the power she wields. Has a good sense of humor; artistic, with a particular admiration for bardic songs. Adventurous, sometimes too much for her own good. Protective of her friends and family.
Flairs: nothing that stands out of place. Her most memorable feature though are her warm amber eyes, with a glint of great sadness in them.
Rumors: there aren't any particular rumors surrounding the young mage, except for her occasional blunders when it comes to the matter of culture and traditions of Tamriel, which seems odd for someone born there. Known to have helped out several Khajiit caravans during her travels, acting as both their guardian and an able healer. Earned a good reputation for her kind nature.
Background: Bethany was born to the family of Malcom Hawke, a simple village carpenter who struggled to make a living for his growing family. Being third child, she knew the hardships of the life for the simple folk from an early age, when her own mother was killed by the Baron's Guards while resisting their advances. Her father sought the answer in the bottle, and before she was even 16, Bethany and her older sister Marian had no choice but to sought out any employment they could find. She was lucky to find a decent working spot with the local tailor who knew the girl to be a hard, diligent worker while her sister took place as a serving maid in the local inn. There wasn't much coin to be made, but they struggled to make a living, enjoying simple joys of life like a gathering together around the hearth-fire, signing songs of the mighty heroes of old who drove their elven oppressors from the land... Her twin brother Carver, though, was another story. Ever since childhood he wanted to be someone, to rise from the poverty of his family and make a name for himself. Against the wishes of his sisters, hot-headed Carver joined the militia... A story that might sound typical for any place in Tamriel. Except for one small detail.
The inhabitants of the small Island of Kirkwall were a xenophobic isolationists, believing themselves to be the last heirs of pure humanity. They frowned upon the best-folk of Tamriel, thinking them to be little better than common animals. But more that that, they hated elves. Not just the elves though, the Lords of Kirkwall sought to illuminate any trace of elven heritage in their domain, anything that might remind them of the Ayled yoke. And one of many such things... was magic. Magic, that run deep in the blood of every Breton on the mainland, was considered an offense, a sign of impurity. Anyone who was born with a gift had instantly became an outcast, often rejected by their own families in fear of their "corruption". But it wasn't until the early Second Era, when Baron Lucas De'Monfort had taken the reign of his father's realm that things had become as grim as they are now. Taking the crusade of his ancestors to ensure the purity of his people, Lucas brought it to the whole new level. Arguing that any who possesses such power is not just a blight upon the society, but an outright threat to the stability of the realm, he instituted a new knightly order to ensure that general population was safe from the "freaks of nature". The Templar order.
These heavy armored knights, clad in full plate and adorned with crimson capes, bore their banner cross the lands of the island, systematically purging anything they perceived as corruption. Especially mages. Any one with a known ability to use magic, be it child or an adult, was slaughtered without mercy. The streets of towns and villages run red with the blood while the onlookers cheered for the Templars to carry on their righteous justice... As the centuries pasted, the iron grip of the Templar Order in the island of Kirkwall became even stronger. Very few families would have risked bringing the rage of the order upon themselves, and thus often surrendered the magic-wielding members of their families on their own accord. The isolation of the island had become stronger than ever, with the kings on the mainland of High Rock ignoring Kirkwall altogether. After all, the fanatics on the island never gave them any major trouble, and invading a well-defended island with a religiously-driven population will simply be too costly. And thus, the island of Kirkwall stood alone. But no border, no matter how well guarded it is will remain impenetrable forever...
As the time passed, some of the people began to question the Templar's right to condemn the mages, in the privacy of their own homes of course. More and more families choose to hide their magically-gifted children, risking everything to protect them from the Templar's gaze. Bethany, of all people, would know it first hand. She was a mage, a child born with a uniquely strong connection to Aetherius, and thus she was destined for the chopping block. Her family went to great lengths to ensure that her "gift" remained a secret. Even more so, she learned a shocking truth - her father Malcom also was a mage! Using whatever limited knowledge he had, Malcom taught his daughter to control her gift, to use it only in the times of dire need and never, ever use it as a way of enforcing her will upon the others, as the Ayled overlords of old did. "Your magic must serve which is best in you, not which is most base!" - he used to say to her after every training session. Malcom believed that magic was a gift of Akatosh, meant to be used for the benefit of his creation. Bethany learned many things from her father, but this lesson she remembered for the rest of her life.
Little did she know that soon things were about to take a turn for the worst. The death of her mother, followed by the tragic demise of her father three years later. And now to top this up, her hot-headed, snobbish-prick-of-a-brother, Carver, had became a Templar! He assured his sisters that he will keep Bethany away from harm, but his reassurance run hollow. He was a chatty drunk, and sooner or later the secret will come out. As if this wasn't enough, her older sister Marian had become involved with some shady people, possible even smugglers from the mainland. Bethany knew that such an offense is punishable by death. When she learned that Marian was working with the Redguard smugglers to ship some of the mages off the dreaded Island, Bethany was confronted with a mixed feelings about it. For once, she admired the courageous stand of her sister and her determination to save lives, as well as the guts it took to do so practically under the nose of the cursed Templars. But she knew all to well that her sister was playing with fire, and it's only a matter of time before it scorches her.
One day while on her way from work to home, she noticed an unusual commotion in the village. When she saw the crimson capes surrounding the inn, cold terror spread through her body as she run towards the line of soldiers. One of them seemed to recognize her as he quickly intercepted Bethany half way across the village square. Struggling against the iron grip of the Templar, it took her a good few minutes to recognize the face of her brother, paler than usual. The look of complete despair in his eyes knocked all fight out youngest Hawke as he motioned her away from the crowd. She knew all too well that he felt the same as she did when Marian was lead out of the inn, escorted by the armored knights of the order. Unable to control herself, Bethany started to channel her magic into her clenched fist, completely ignoring the look of utter shock on Carver's face. But before her spell could be finished, her eyes linked with the ones of her sister for a brief moment. In a single stern look Marian managed to convey her message better than a thousand words - DON'T. Lowering her hand and letting the blue glow of magic disappear, Bethany watched as her sister was taken into the keep never to be seen again...
The same night she was woken up by a loud banging on her door. Afraid of what might come next, she opened the door... only to see her brother, Carver. Before she could even ask what's going on he practically dragged her outside and walked her down the narrow back alleys of the village, every now and then looking around like a man chased by a fierce predator. When they finally made it to the small rocky beach beneath the cliffs where her village stood, Carver finally spoke. He informed her that her attempted use of magic earlier did not went unnoticed, and that Templars are already on her tracks. Before Bethany who was in a state of shock could say or do anything, Carver lead her to the water where she noticed a small boat, guarded by three dark-skinned men. Without hesitation Carver handed them a heavy purse of gold, motioning his sister to come closer. He instructed her to follow these men to their ship and when she does, get out of here. Out of Kirkwall, even out of High Rock for good, and to never come back if she values her life or the life her sister gave to protect her secret... Shivering in the crisp midnight air, she watched as the figure of Carver standing on the rocks became smaller and smaller, until he vanished into the night never to be seen again...
To the outsiders, there is little that can be known for certain bout her, as she appears to be quite elusive when questioned about her family, making it clear that it isn't an easy topic for her. She claims to have come from the outskirts of Wayrest, yet her repeated blunders in regards general Breton culture and traditions make it doubtful that she's telling the truth. For the year and a half she spent in Tamriel mainland, Bethany traveled far and wide across many lands, making her utmost to stay away from the madness in Cyrodiil.
