Why are you named that?

This came up in Teamspeak last night and I thought it was a great topic!

My account name is @DatBokeh because I work in video / film. Bokeh is the out of focus and blurry part of an image and is the staple of film and professional photography. When I'm working, I usually mumble "Dat bokeh doe..." when I see a really shallow depth of field.

My character name Ri'sari comes from Jo'sari which has always been my necromancer mage kitty in Elder Scrolls games past. I hesitated on making the name here in ESO for awhile because you can't be a necromancer. But, in the end, I just had to make him. I actually remade him when I started the guild to give the title of Ri'. When else do you get to use that?! :D

Now, onto the meat of the matter. For many years now, I have gone by the online moniker of RedLion whenever I could. Its origin is quite simple. Red is my favorite color and the lion is my 'beast heart'. The "2000" part is tacked on when necessary and is my year of high school graduation.

Sarena, as I may have mentioned before, has been a character I have used since playing Morrowind, though she could not be fully used properly until Skyrim brought us dual-wielding. Her name comes from one the main characters of my favorite book called "Catamount" written by Michael Peak. In the book, Sarena was a puma struggling to survive--alone at times--in the wilds of California as the territory was being encroached upon by many outside factors, and as such, in every ES incarnation, I have tried to make her as puma-esque as possible, though I did like the hairstyle I use today on her.

First my @ name. One of the early RPG's I played was the West End Games D6 Star Wars RPG. In that back of the corebook was a adventure named Mesa 291 (one of the only "book" adventure I ever have used). There was a Imperial ISB agent in that book that was intended to be a throw away bad guy named Mar Barezz. I ended up reusing the character throughout the campaign, and in future Star Wars campaigns. I even played a version in Star Wars Galaxies. So that is where the name comes from.

Eretria Stormbinder is a shorter story. I recently started reading the Shannara series by Terry Brooks, and there is a character named Eretria that I liked in the second book. Stormbinder I got from researching names in ESO. I wanted her to have a high elven last name to reflect her backstory, and liked the way Stormbinder sounded after looking up Altmer names.

@heavy_artillery comes from a nickname friends gave me years ago. I've often been the biggest guy out of my group of friends. I'm tall, and generally just a big guy, and back in the day when Craigslist and buying things online from strangers was relatively new, a friend bought some concert tickets from someone he didn't know. He was asked to meet at a gas station a fair distance from his house and asked if I would go with him, even if only to stand silently near his car while he completed his transaction. You know, as "the heavy." He added the artillery part and it stuck. I am frequently asked (by actual soldiers) if I'm in the armed services. I mean no disrespect by using the moniker and actually, it's an unintentional shout-out to my pop, who was in a mortar platoon in Vietnam.

This one is so named Dar'jiradh because Dar'jiradh is sneaky, quiet, clever and sly.

@Towim is an acronym. Some 14 years ago I spent the majority of my life on an RP chat-based site. I had well over 25 characters that were quite well known among the population. At any given time, I was playing 3-4 of them simultaneously, and with such vastly different personalities (even speech patterns) that it was difficult to know they were all played by me. One day I slipped up and dropped the wrong post into the wrong window and gave away my secret. Many of the players were baffled to learn it was me! I became known as "The One Who Is Many" or T.O.W.I.M. on their boards for years.

I have now actually had both postal mail and phone calls for Towim. I have since made it my pen name when I write as J.C. Towim.

Sumar was actually a typo. I needed a new character and I wanted an assassin who used poisons all of the time. I named him Samar, and he was a human rogue. Samar follows my normal naming rules of five letter character names with strong consonants for memorability. Samar never took off as a character, and when I needed a quick name for a new DnD 4th ed. character, I recalled the name... almost. I named him Sumar. Later I dug up the old character sheet and realized I had not quite hit the target, but actually liked this one better. Even if Sumar is the name of a killer whale.

A Gata means The Cat in pt-br.
I did this character to have some fun and I was going to delete her afterwards, but I fell in love with her.
also, it made me feel unneasy to delete her after I spent almost 2h making her face look purr-fect

oh, my account name is @rainha, my friends call me that and I am not the one to argue with them lol. the nickname stuck, yeah.

(rainha means queen, because they say I am a cat queen, or that I have a kitty khalaazar, since I have like 8 cats, so yeah)

@Beckify - Beckify is a nickname that a friend of mine came up with. My real name is Rebecca, and I usually go by Beck. So the story goes, I worked with a group a friends and we had a work forum and I was a complete smartass on those forum (it's in my nature, I guess) and whenever I would say something smart to someone, my friend would say "You've just been Beckified!" And then the nickname Beckify was born. Silly story but the nickname stuck so it was the only thing I could think of to use for ESO.

Now my character names, Lucrezia and Cesare, come from Lucrezia and Cesare Borgia. She was known as this sweet innocent looking girl that would use poison hidden in a hallow ring to kill her enemies. And Cesare was a very skilled swordsman and killer, and a bit of a madman some say. I was going to originally make Cesare a Bosmer also but I only had one spot left and no Imperials yet so I made him Imperial instead.

"Science Cat", "The Science Cat", "Sci-Kitty".

I really enjoyed the group until I agreed to take XO (Executive Officer), and then the Captain and I didn't have a lot of common ground when it came to leadership styles.

"J'vani" comes from... well, I'm not sure. I think it might have been a random name generator, but whatever. It still sounds cool, right?

Lyrro is a gamertag I've been using for just about every game I've played since around ninth grade, when I used a random name generator that gave me the name "Lyrroth". I took off the "th" and it's as simple as that.

Ruje and Ma'Zha are both based off characters from a book I was writing back in high school. Their backstories are almost identical to their backstories in the book except that they have been slightly altered to fit the ESO lore. The only real differences are that some of the names were changed to be more ESO accurate, to include Ma'Zha who was originally named Demien. Ruje took Demien under his tutelage and they actually ended up travelling with Neos, Markus, and the rest of his group because Demien did not want to leave Neos' group and Ruje was recently injured in an ambush and needed someone to take him to see Sylvia. I wanted a more khajiit name for Demien, so I used a name generator and after about an hour of looking over various names I decided I liked Ma'Zha. "Ma" being the khajiit prefix meaning "young or apprentice".

@connyn... connyn is just something I've used for the past 7 years or so as an easy to remember screen name. Ive become attached. It literally means nothing, just got contrived one day and has been used ever since lol. (pronounced cone-in, not con-in)

I chose the name Newelian because I don't like to add last names to my characters unless absolutely necessary, and I thought it sounded kind of bosmer-y. I try to name my characters and horses racially appropriate names as much as possible, and have had fun with it lol.

@shotmagnet is my long time gamer name, it stems from some of my first pen and paper starwars RPGs where the GM would roll a dice to see who the target or "shot magnet" would be in an ambush, and nine times out of ten it would be me, so I became the shotmagnet. It got so bad at times that I would be left out of the roll just so someone else would be the one to suffer. :D but I decided to keep the title and have used it as my gamer tag ever since.

Ansaari I just made up because it sounded "Khajiit" to me. the 'ri' at the end just fits even more since it is used in TES games for Khajiit. I did not know at the time I made the name though.

As for Inata, the name came from a book I read once, I liked it so I kept it around. And no it is not from Naruto. I think it came from a Ship name in a starwars book, but don't remember for sure.

I feel like we're explaining our tattoos haha. I chose @Angryskittle because it represents my personality a bit. I'm usually sweet and nice, but I can get moody. I have battled anger management issues since I was a child. Studying martial arts and serving in the military has helped give me more control, but it's something I will always have to deal with.
I look back on my antics and I always think of Steve Irwin saying,"He's so angreh!" As he dodges around avoiding a poisonous/dangerous animal, lol. Seriously though, if you ever get my sour side, know that it likely has nothing to do with you personally.

Why at the time I took on this name: I saw myself as a whisperer, a human whisperer - kinda like the horse whisperer but for ppls LOL Trinity was the first to reach through to NEO

Tryynity Belle is now a character based on the soul me - not the person you see.

Woo, the game behind the names!

PhoenixTheKid is a reference to my voice: if you're on TeamSpeak, you'll know that my voice is easily recognizable. Pick out the highest-pitched, Tinkerbell voice, and you've found me. I'm used to people squealing over how adorable I sound, or from the endless questions about my age. I'm 21, but I will forever sound like a 7-year-old. The Phoenix bit might come from a couple different places, but I can't remember the exact origin. It might be the fact that Fawkes from Harry Potter is my favorite magical creature in the books, or it might be that the Phoenix represents the feminine aspect of a couple in Chinese mythology, with the male aspect being the dragon. It might be from the fact that I enjoy setting things on fire, and that I am an artist that works with fire on a regular basis (metallurgy, jewelry smithing, glass lampworking, ceramics, and glass kilnworking). Or it could be that I just fuckin' love phoenixes.

Donvyn Sarethi isn't one of the most creative names I've had for an Elder Scrolls character. I did dip into entomology to craft his name: Donvyn is a portmanteau of Donald and Vincent, names that allude to conquerors and emperors. I had originaly imagined Donvyn as a very regal personality, but something happened along the way and I ended up with this prissy, cowardly failure of a vampire. Sarethi comes from several NPCs in Morrowind and Skyrim. If you remember the Sarethi Farm in the Rift, you'll remember Avrusa, a botanical alchemist trying to make ends meet by farming, and her sister, Aduri, who is unhappy with life on the farm and wants to be a painter. If you remember Morrowind, you'll remember Athyn Sarethi, the Redoran councilman, and most of all, the Sarethi Ancestral Tombs, occupied by... VAMPIRES!

@FenirKerikan comes form my old Vampire the Masquerade days when I was an evil vampy who was the Arch Bishop of a group of sabbat vampires (if your familirar w/ VtM you'll know what I mean" I've used this handle for probably 14 - 15 years now, though on frequent occasions I find it has been stolen by someone ... for example in WoW when ifianly starte dplaing someone had stolen my name. Usually it's the name I give my Dunmer characters.

Shere'Khaann comes from The Jungle Book of course!!! I love Disney movies :)

Sylvarris ~ For a while I was into this board game "Heroscape" and Sylvarris, an elven archer, was my favorite character. I've always named my main in any game Sylvarris.

My name started out as the result of a game. The game involved two questions, "what are you secretly?" and "what will you never be?" You of course could not answer for yourself so you had to pick someone else to come up with your answers. My friends answers were "He's a psychopath." and "A convict?"

At the time I needed a name for role playing chat rooms I was a part of on Yahoo. I put Psy and Con together and dropped the P when the name didn't look right.

I have used Sycon as my name in everything I could since. He's been many different things, many different types of people. I like to think my history is a worthy tale over a couple of beers.

The 420 came from my old Xbox Clan and the fact I was not a very good boy growing up.

Dai Drek'Tai means "of the void-lands" roughly when translated to English.

Been everywhere from Yahoo to pen and paper to internet games and forums. I am an eleven year veteran of MMO's. In almost all I played, I held the name on one server or another. Or in one form or another.

I typically use the name Serra in some way, shape or form as a game name.. I went with Slips-Through-Blades because I was trying to be lore friendly.. But my Dragon Knight's name is A'rres Noma and if you look A'rres is Serra spelled backwards.. My Sorcerer's name is Vierna Serra'Do'Urden, yes part of it is from an R.A. Salvatore book but Serra is in there.. Serra originated from my warrior in GW1.. When I started playing GW2 I wanted to use a similar name.. Well my main ended up being a thief named Serra Frost and everyone on Devona's Rest server knew me.. Which was quite an accomplishment since I wasn't being that social lol.. But my name got out there thanks to me being able to shadow enemy zergs and report on their location and intent without getting caught.. And yeah.. Serra tends to be my gamer tag.. So you can all call me that instead of Slips.. I'll respond better in TS lmao

Mija has been a character name for me since a little game I played called the Realm. It's actually a Nordic nickname for Maria. Although, since in Spanish it means "my little girl", I have adopted the spirit of the word for the character.

My name is actually derived from my actual name. First Name: Edward, Last name: Emberley Put it together, you get Eddiember.

As for Gnarlus character name, well, a pictures worth a thousand words... But I'll add some: I randomly draw a card out of my old Chaotic Deck. It's actually worked because in the Anime, to whole 2 lines he spoke is similar to how Gnarlus would talk, minus the Bad English.

I was assume most of you arlready know how one could end up with a name like that.

E = First letter of first name.

G = First letter of Middle name.

Rasmusson = Last name.

In my hast I didn't know that this would end up as something that other people saw, Or I might have used some some the little short names or aliases I have come up with over the years, but I didn't read anything and just wanted to hop into the game as soon as possible. I though it would simply be an account name none saw. Was I sure wrong about that.

J'sarr is called J'sarr because if he wasn't called J'sarr he wouldn't be J'sarr.

When I had to come up with a public account name for ESO, I delved into my gaming history for something that I wouldn't mind being known as. It was obvious that I'd be known mostly by my account name and not by my character name(s).

In EQ1 on the roleplaying server Firiona Vie, my main became known as "...the Winnower"; eventually to the point where she got that as a unique in-game title. Even on a roleplaying server you'd get non-roleplayers, but she was known server-wide in the roleplaying and raiding circles. That was my longest, and probably my best, MMO experience, not counting TinyLondon MUD (text-based MMO).

All my characters names are selected by my combining name research with either canon of Elder Scrolls, or projections of those cultures.

Imperials = Latin/Italian - might be safe to wander to other historical Mediterranean cultures as well.
Nords = scandinavians
Dun,Bos,Alt = elves, that kind of makes it easy
Bretons = Irish/Scottish/British - (not quite really, but makes a nice name base if you go back to gaelic,etc)
Khajiit and Argonian have some nice built-in naming conventions in the canon
Reguard = Persian / Macedonian / Arabic / African names do quite well
Orsimer = put in a "K" and a "GRR" and you got something

With my Imperials I decided to lift the name of Rimini, an historical clan and a place. Sigismundo, Livia, Drusilla, Magnus, Claudius, Sharona, etc. are all obvious latinate names.

My nord is Aud.

Rhayanna Morton is my Breton.

And I have Uighilin, Tauriel, Ereni as mer. Do'Zohan Zahan, and Walks with Pele, and Wakeem al Ashahab (redguard) and others. My orc was raised by argonians and is Tears in the Rain.

@Calomel is pulled directly from my first MMO character. When I started playing WoW, I wanted to make a healer with a not-so-nice name. Tried all kinds of poison names, and they were all taken. Nightshade, Arsenic, Cyanide, nope nope nope. I started digging deeper, trying to find an obscure one that didn't sound terrible, and came across Calomel. A white, chalky mineral, it used to be administered orally as a medicinal purgative. Perfect! I was Calomel the human Holy Priest for years, and have kept the name for it's sentimental value. In most places online, Calomel is me. Though as the years go by, I'm finding it harder and harder to claim the name for myself as others snap it up. Either people are running into me and liking the name, or there's a few out there who are really into mineral-based diuretics. :confused:

My characters:

John Wolf: His real name is John Rosson ( I'm a regretful idiot for naming him Wolf. A moment of player weakness that I'd gladly change if I could). Originally meant to be a one-off NPC character in a forum RP, I couldn't think of a name for him, and picked "John Doe". He didn't have a background or even a real name. He was just some thug NPC that I fully intended to drop as soon as the chapter was over. The RP lasted longer than I'd anticipated with him, and he started developing a personality and connections. I had to give him a real name and a backstory, as it suddenly became relevant to have one. His mother's name is Rose, and she's a whore. So he is a fatherless bastard with no family name. Only "Rose's Son". Rosson. It's likely his father was a customer at the whore house, so I assumed that Rose named him after her "john". Wolf comes from his lycanthropy, a juvenile attempt at breaking from his past, and the wolf branch of the Brackenleaf Briars. Not having a real family, the idea of the wolves as his family was a very appealing idea and he embraced it.

@omgz0mbiesrun was something I came up with a few years ago when needing a new email address actually. I am a HUGE fan of zombie t.v. shows, movies, video games, etc. I'm not a huge horror movie fan.. but zombies never left me just afraid. They left me afraid and excited! Just love zombie stuff. :3

My character names were all things that sounded like they fit to me. ^_^;

@Ice_Eye is a spin off of my main char Mo'jahi Ice-Eye. This was the first character I created myself when I started playing Skyrim, the first game I played of the TES franchise (I have since played Oblivion as well). Also Ice_Eye is easy to remember and can be easily shortened to Ice so useful in that aspect.

Yihn's name is based off of a character I had long ago in a RP-PVP text MMO (or MUD, as some know). The name isn't exactly the same, for the following reason: When I started roleplaying in SWTOR, I had a cathar whose sister's name is Yihn, with a diminutive being the name of the first MUD character (I managed to link the stories together across lore-worlds; difficult, but it was done.)

Here, I decided that I would like to continue Yihn's adventures, though in all essences, this Yihn is a completely new character in terms of backstory, though perhaps not in mannerisms. I'd like to think she lives on.

@hogsfan73 is a reference to the Redskins offensive line in the 80"s (The Hogs). Im a huge skins fan, my son is named after John Riggins. Vah Shir the Shadow of Luclin is a nod to my Everquest days (Vah Shir is the cat race, and Luclin their home). Menzo Berranzan is a nod to my favorite books/character/DND realm. It is the home of Drizzt Do'Urden from the Forgotten Realm. I used it on an Imperial toon tho cause "Hey Menzo", sounded kinda Italian, and my toon looks thus. My other toons are mainly bank toons, Toofattoadventure, Gemstona, Alchemistiana, you get the point.

@Za'Kir was actually going to be my name afore Bhidul, but it was taken. -_-" So yeah... Then I got Bhidul, I was goin to call him Ri'Bhidul ANC change his backstory, but I forgot to add a prefix... That's really it.

When my dad played Ultima Online, he prided himself off of his clever and original names, and he continues to do so today. Names like, "Amanda and Pana B'atai", "Colarune", "Gavin Goldheart (A special story)", and "Grulimar". I always admired the way that my dad was able to randomly run a stream of letters in his head until it formed a name that just sounded unique and special, and I have always tried reciprocating that. Shazaré is the product of hours of thought on a great online name, and it has stuck with me since it's conception. I plan to continue using it throughout as it makes a permanent online footprint in my name.

Maybe, I'll be crazy enough to name my child after it. Maybe.

EDIT: Devin Wolf Shazaré is currently my full name online. Devin Wolf is based off of one of my previous Xbox Live gamertags, "The Deviwolf". D'avidar and M'ilas from my character sheet are in no way related to any of these. They are brand new names that I came up with, and both are spawned off of my father's first name, Miles, and his middle name, David.

My name. I chose my @name because its a mixing of my personal nickname and my vary first toon in EQ @KasFlix Kas is the nickname I have always had from the time I was 11 and Flix was a shadowknight darkelf.

Aalista was a highelf mage I played in EQ. I had used the name in Skyrim and Oblivion. I guess the name is stuck on me now.

My name Krajin I just.. made one day. Sounded good and I stick to it.

Kade I guess is the same way. I'm terrible at names and creating them.

So...one day a very long time ago, I decided to try out this new MMO thing called EverQuest. I started the random name generator and it came up with the name Lynadianya (pronounced Leena-dee-anya). It just seemed to resonate with me. I played Everquest for 1 month at launch. My friends were playing this game called Asheron's Call, and since we were all on dial-up at the time, and we only had 1 phone line, if we were ever going to talk to each other again, we would need to do it in-game. So, I ditched EverQuest and played Asheron's Call with a completely gimped sword/archer named Lynadianya. In every MMO since, I've had a character named that (usually a paladin or healer type).

So, I've had this name for ages, and my best friend was reading some fiction I had written using the character name of Lynadianya. She pronounced it Lina-dee-anya so I corrected her and it was supposed to be Leena and oh'boy did she blow. I didn't really catch on to the fact that the name of the girl who her fiancé had cheated on her with was Leena and yada, yada...I created the name Aloradianya.

So, my character names are typically some combination of Lyn something or Alora something:

I looked up the trends in Bosmer names. Without following the exact rules, I used something similar to their prefixes and suffixes. The last name is a little different, it means dweller by the sea. Both first and last names are different Colossi from Shadow of the Colossus.

Krimie Nightwood's name is quite simple.
Nightwood - it's a typical bosmer name
Krimie - a funny little name that just came to me. I wanted something that sounded fairly cute and innocent. Which Krimie usually is Not.
Also her first name is pronounced "creamy"

My first MMO (EQ) name was "Erol" taken from the great D&D artist of the late 70's/early 80's and I've used it in many games.

I came up with Ynys one night while drinking a Guiness and trying to figure out an interesting name for a gnome, thus Ynys (pronounced Yin-is). Turns out it stands for "island" in Welsh so not a bad name.

Eh, why not.

I've always been the kind of guy who constantly thinks about my MMO characters and comes up with backstories, middle and last names, and other stuff like that.

@Aretoth21 comes from almost a decade ago when I was into playing World of Warcraft, the first MMO I've ever played. "Aretoth" was the first character of mine to get to level 60 back in Vanilla (RIP you sexy human warrior stud). Along with being referred to as "Aret" or "Aretoth" by my guild-mates despite the fact they knew my real name; and even friends IRL, the name "Aretoth" stuck for good. Now, I use "Aret" or "Aretoth" for almost all my online gaming accounts, including Xbox Live - my gamertag is Aret21.

I was in two guilds at the time. Forgottenx was my raiding character (and raid he did!), and Aretoth was my casual / light RP character (and ERP he did!). One day out of the blue my Casual/RP guild started discussing better names for their alts, last names, etc, and I came up with the name "Seth Winter" for my rogue. The name hung around for about a year before I switched it over to Jason, and added an "S" to "Winter" to make it flow better. I thought about using "Seth" as a middle name but "Thomas" fit so much better as a middle.... It wasn't long then that Jason, Aretoth, and Robert all became my... fursonas. That's when things really took off in the characterization department for me (I'm such a huge furry D:) and today it remains Jason the arctic wolf rogue, Aretoth the fox warrior, and Robert the collie paladin. I've even had my characters commissioned in drawings on Furaffinity!

Mine does ot have a nice and interesting history .... @fjaenale it comes from my RL name and last names conbination :). Also in 1994 was my first login name for internet :D

However my char name Styphon, well it comes from my first RPG (paper and pen) gameplay. He is one of the 4 Dragons at the Palladium RPG world, well in fact is the Evil one ;)

Abbadox was a nickname that everyone called me from jr high up to highschool. It has something to do with the old nintendo Abadox game which I never played and an addition of my last name. At one point I made it a Dot Com. But that didn't last and it was soon bought out by abbadox.com medical supplies.

Agadeem my character name is a name from Magic the Gathering that has stuck with me since I bought the card.

Drakofonias is Dragon Slayer in greek. This name was given to me back when I was playing Everquest with my greek friend Nikos. I have used it on and off for many years.

Shaddos my character name is from Neverwinter Nights 2. The name of a demon. Since its discovery I have used it for all my female characters.

Listarchos Devious my character name is probably my most known among those of Starwars Galaxies on the Ahazi and Starsider server. When players converse with me they call me List. This is my handle online. The one and only.

This may be a little late but I sure someone might like this.

My @name is @GnarlyArchfiend. I picked this one because I am a fan of Daredevil but i didnt want to use @daredevil so I split the two words in daredevil and picked a synonym for both words and put them together.

When making Magik I was creating a character for and when it was time to name her i was stuck for a few minutes thinking about whats a good name. Her last name 'Darkchilde' was a huge typo. Her real last name was suppose to be Darkclyde but some how i put Darkchilde and didnt realize this until i was lvl 30. but this is not surprising because i always make typos.


Afer was originally suppose to be named Owain but i realize there was a another hard headed kid named Owain the fire emblem series so I decided to pick a name off generator that rolled off the tongue.
The reason I put 'The infallible' Instead of his real name is because I wanted a name that was ironic.

My Account name @malatorius comes from My Villianous Dungeons and Dragon Days where i'd play a villian trying to kill oher villians to prove how much more villianous he was. this particular name i'd use in various games was usually an evil cleric, or blackguard.

when i finally found a class in Warcraft that reflected all the things i wanted to be and do in a MMMORPG, The Deathknight, I recycled the name, as a Blood Elf, and traipsed about the countryside killing other bad guys and taking their treasures to use in my characters own reign of terror.

My Currrent character Ser Krynger Battlecat comes from my love of watching He-man as a child and Battlecat, his faithful steed, was the most heroic name i could think of for a Cat Warrior and since this is my FIRST Elder Scrolls game EVER, i was unfamiliar with Khajiit naming conventions until i started playing the game but somehow i lucked out and the name still worked.

as an aside if anyone knows any hot muscled up blondes wielding a sword who'd like to go for a ride, send them my way i'm down!
