Elgin was small, weak, and lacking fur and claws was often the target of Khajiit bullying and thievery. This earned his resentment, which perhaps also turned inward in the form of displaced anger at his own helplessness. His internalized anger, resentment and powerlessness call out like a beacon to the Daedra who know that they can turn his character flaws against him, or control him with it.

In short he is more capable than his youth and size would suggest. When his magicka is expended he relies on his destruction staff.
