Background:
Lanissi’s family can trace its heritage back generations to what was once the kingdom of Pelletine, before it was unified with Anequina to become Elsweyr. The Majnava clan thrived on the rich resources of the jungle. Lanissi’s parents owned a sizable sugarcane crop, which they would refine into moon sugar. Growing up, it was not kept a secret to Lanissi and her 6 siblings (Lanissi being the smallest, though not the youngest) that their parents dabbled in the skooma trade on the side for extra income. As she grew older, Lanissi was expected not only to help out with the harvest, but to learn the ins and outs of running skooma as well.
When she was old enough to make her own way in the world, she decided to put her small size and agility coupled with her familiarity with the discretions of the skooma trade to good use. She became a sellsword of sorts: her skills could be bought by the highest bidder, but she was more likely to be found thieving, spying, and helping her associates run skooma than fighting. Still, she did find it necessary to acquire some training in melee combat and could hold her own in a fight when she had to. Lanissi’s abilities came to be regarded highly enough that she could begin to be more selective in accepting jobs. It then became clear that coin was not enough to win Lanissi’s loyalty. She would only accept jobs that jibed with her own moral compass. This allowed her to both be true to herself and to maintain an air of mystery—her morals were not easy to ascertain, and she would often accept one skooma running job while turning down another in the same breath.
When the Knahaten Flu reached Elsweyr, Lanissi was doing a job in Hammerfell and was spared. Her parents was not so fortunate. For months Lanissi lived in uncertainty, unable to find out whether her family had survived or not. It was, of course, unsafe for her to return to Elsweyr to seek her family, and travel from Elsweyr to Hammerfell was not permitted so Lanissi couldn’t find a soul who might know what had happened to her home. Finally, an associate of Lanissi’s made it to Hammerfell and passed on word that everyone at the Majnava farm had perished. Which of her siblings had been home and also fallen victim remains unknown, so Lanissi lives in hope that one day she will find one of her siblings that has become lost to her.
In the wake of this tragedy, Lanissi returned to Elsweyr once the plague had passed to try to help rebuild and find what might remain of her family. It was a struggle for the people of Elsweyr to recover, and Lanissi saw firsthand the great help that Queen Ayrenn’s followers provided, allowing compassion to overpower whatever prejudice they might hold towards the Khajit. It was then that Lanissi decided to lend her daggers and stealth to the Aldmeri Dominion, thinking that would be the best way to aid her people given her skill set.
