Its funny what thoughts can pop up in ones mind at the strangest times.
The arrow hit its target with enough force to send a hairline crack through its shaft.
Earlier that day Kazzah had brought a plate of food for Gnarlus. Mostly to see if the rumors were true. The "jail" looked to be a hastily constructed addition to what was supposed to be the stables. Someone had built in windows small enough for a prisoner to look out of but not fit through. Kazzah sat a distance away watching the guards and curious clan members milling about letting the questions begin to form.
Had the goblin actually been arrested? Had he really lead the Thalmor here? What was this about him killing someone? Why was the Clan Mother back? Wasn't she dead?
This is when one of those funny thoughts pulled its way out of some forgotten part of his mind.
That cell window is almost the exact size as a ships porthole. I could put an arrow through that window easily.
What felt like a lifetime ago Kazzah had trained for a shot exactly like this when he was the crew of a merchant ship. The captain had insisted the crew be ready to defend the ship if pirates decided to attack. His role was to be part of the long range defense. While the hired ship wizard would cast destruction spells above deck along with the regular archers Kazzah and a few others were to fire burning arrows into the ship portholes below deck in attempt to set fire to the enemy ship from the inside. Kazzah had always thought this was a silly tactic that probably wouldn't be very practical but at each port the captain insisted they train this defense. He became quite good at that particular shot. To be honest it was calming after awhile to practice this one shot over and over again.
A few hours later Kazzah stood outside of town as the sun was setting with his bow in hand staring at the small target he constructed out of extra timber borrowed from the supplies intended for reconstruction of the S'ren-ja. He wasn't intending on assassinating the goblin, he just wanted that calming feeling of training that shot again.
It felt strange to hold his bow again. When was the last time he had even shot it? Was it when he attempted to take John's life after attacking Ri'sari? It all seemed so long ago.
He held the bow aiming at the target as the hot desert air sent a few gusts of dirt into the air. His hands were unsteady, shaking, he let the shot loose missing the target completely. The lack of skooma was taking its toll on him. No one had seemed to notice he had not been using it for the last few weeks. No had mentioned how he seemed distracted, that he looked tired, that he was gone more than usual. They couldn't have know it was because he was in his room dealing with the pain of withdrawals. He had a mate now. He was important to his clan. He didn't want to ruin it all for a little high.
He shoots again *miss*
Again *miss*
Again *miss*
Kazzah growled to himself. He just wanted to make this shot but his shaking hands wouldn't cooperate and his whole body ached. Digging through his bag he pulls out a small bottle of blue skooma from the last production he had intended to ever be in charge of making.
Just to make this shot.
Sipping the bottle and setting it aside he felt the familiar rush of the skooma take hold. Not much but enough to steady his shot. Taking aim he lets loose and the arrow strikes it target dead on. He smiles and sets up another shot and lets it fly. The arrow hits home as Kazzah smiles and without thinking sips from the bottle again.
I could hit that goblin if I had to
Shoots again *hit* Ha...no one would even see it coming! takes another sip.
Again *hits* It was his fault he was put in there anyway
Again *miss* takes another sip
Again *hits* he betrayed the clan!
Again *hits* he brought the Thalmor!
Again *miss* takes a big sip
Again *hits* He caused Ri'sari to almost die! He did cause Ja'Amore to die!
Again *hits* He almost killed me! He got me arrested! He was the reason the clan split up to begin with!
Again *hits* He wants to die...This one can help that little bastard with that!
Its dark now. The clouds cover the moons. Rain spatters the ground as Kazzah kneels under a tree a distance from the jails. The cold air and water dripping from the leaves feels good to his skooma heated body in contrast to the hot air from earlier. He can feel the mud under his wrapped feet and smell the torch burning from the cells where the guard stands. He can't quite make out who is on duty at the moment through the rain.
The rain lets up suddenly. Kazzah looks on as the clouds let through the moonlight enough to make out the small cell window clearly. The guard turns to look at something in the other direction. The goblins face, that horrid ugly little face, shows itself at the window! Time almost stops as Kazzah raises the bow and aims the shot. A small note is attached to the shaft of the arrow. It is written in exaggerated flowing script so as not to give hints as to who has written it. It simply reads "Betrayer!". Everything could not have been more perfect for a shot like this. He could even make out the rain water...no the goblin was inside.....tears running down the goblins face and dripping from his nose and chin.
He lets loose the arrow.
Remember those funny thoughts. Yeah another one entered Kazzah's mind right before that shot. A thought that caused him to adjust his aim at the last moment to one of the large wooden beams making up the outside structure of what was the former stables.
He is my friend.
