These are the rules that we operated under on Mistral that earned us much respect. Ma'zura does his best to remember them exactly, here, but may make a few errors. Also, some may have to be adapted to serve the needs of the Sugar-Claw Companions. Still, he hopes they serve as a good guideline, at least.
We, of the House-of-Five;
1) Do not do what has not been asked.
2) Do not take what as not been given.
3) Do not stay past our welcome.
4) Do not return without invitation.
5) Do not remember unless reminded.
Those were the simple rules. To explain them, they mean:
One, that we would respect the wishes of the client, absolutely. A massage stays a massage until the one paying decides otherwise. Beyond being polite, it is difficult to demand payment when a client can say he 'did not ask for this'. So things must always, always be asked for.
Two, that we only take payment in gold - and not any loose items the client may have left laying around when we leave.
Three, we leave with the rising of the sun, or before if the client wishes. It has been said you do not pay a consort for companionship, you pay them to leave the next morning. We excelled at both.
Four is very important because of the delicate nature of our work. If someone wants to see you again, they will find you. A smile to someone in a tavern may be appreciated, but chasing return business is often not. They knew where we worked, that was enough.
Number five is similar to number four. Except among your fellow-workers, there is no memory of what you have done or who you have been with. Some honesty is always needed, and a good story is a good story, but volunteering names and dates and places will offend a client greatly.
There are a few more guidelines we had, but they were not generally given out. If one remembers - We did not work outside of Mistral. We would visit when invited, but across the water, we would not seek clients. If we were leaving the city on work, we were always to let someone know we were leaving and where we were going. A scary incident inspired that one. Never take a job on a boat, always take sailors home to the House or to the inn. Even officers. Especially officers. Too many rumors of consorts having a single-nights' employment turn into a long-term contract with those. But Ma'zura does not think that will be a concern in the March.
