((I realize this is not a storyline, journal, or story, but this felt like the appropriate place for a collection of letters between two characters. It is not a roleplay, nor do I know if it will be continued.))

Fredas, 12th day of Evening Star, 2E 582

El,

I’m not sure if I’m doing this right, as I’ve never written a letter before—in fact, I was never one for writing. You see, it was never a necessary skill when I lived on the settlement, selling low-quality food and whatever potions I could concoct with the plants and flowers I could find in the surrounding area. On occasion, my parents required me to document my sales—to make sure I wasn’t holding out some of the earnings meant for the family, but, even then, it didn’t take a comprehensive understanding for written word. However, Valaste assures me that my writing skills are fine. And, now, I’m rambling.

Sitting with you in that market square, talking about the adventures and tribulations we’d had in each other’s absence, made me realize I had more to say than I spoke—if that makes sense. I was just so excited to have you close once more that I could not decide what I wanted to tell you first, and I fear in this excitement I did not convey what I wanted to tell. Your flattery left my mind jumbled and my thoughts few, as it often does. In this personal disorientation came a desire to voice my words even after our conversation ended, as we searched for a place to stay the night.

While you were off in Shadowfen taking care of the corruption you found, I found myself back in Auridon on business of one of the Queen’s men. You see, he thought I would be the best candidate for the job, as I am unknown and unthreatening, yet have learned to wield my staff and powers well in battle. I was to assassinate these three leaders of the Veiled Heritance. The moment he informed me about their standing with the rebellion I knew that there was no way I was not taking this job. The Veiled Heritance was responsible for my treatment and failure at the College of Aldmeri Propriety. They were responsible for the treatment, the abuse, and the death, of the Khajiit and Bosmer students that entered that foul, corrupt shithole. I may not have been physically or mentally strong enough to extract my revenge when you found me, but I was in that moment, standing in front of a guard offering me the perfect opportunity to get even.

I had never killed before. I had never done real harm to a fellow mer, man, or beast. I never felt it my place to decide their fate, but that was before. The settlement I had lived in had been harsh and did not leave room for error, but there had been a sense of community and livelihood that dulled the hardship that came with living in that destitute, war-worn settlement in Northern Reaper’s March. When entering that supposed place of learning, I thought things would be better, yet I suffered from the same hardships there as I did in Reaper’s March. However, this time, I did not have that feeling of community.

And, I am still rambling. Maybe, I will continue that story on another day, but I started this letter with a purpose, and, perhaps, it is time I got around to saying it.

Sitting there in that market square, talking about the adventures and tribulations we’d had in each other’s absence surrounded by all those strangers, I realized something. I no longer felt isolated and alone. Wrapped up in your embrace, I thought back to our time apart, in light of this information, and I realized I had not felt alone then, either, because even when I was alone I knew that we would meet again—that our separation was only temporary.

Part of this speaks to how I felt living in that settlement located in Reaper’s March, I was never happy there. Never happy hurrying about—desperate to earn my keep—for fear that if I fell short, as doing so held the consequences of starvation—not just my own but of my siblings. When I was in Reaper’s March, there was this feeling of community, but not of personal connection, if that makes sense. At the college, I was just another filthy Bosmer that had to fend for themselves, as best I could. However, when I started living at that camp of yours, it was no longer about another body to collect resources to keep us afloat for another day. It was no longer about just making it through the day. It was about betterment and the future. It was about recovering and strengthening. And, sitting there with you today, I realized I could enjoy the moment and look towards the future—and I don’t mean frantic attempts and grand schemes to bring about change.

For the first time in my life, I am capable of being independent. I am capable of providing and supporting myself. With this discovery came an understanding. An understanding of us. You are not my first relationship, but you’re the first one that mattered. It is in this independence and ability to stand on my own that I am able to share my life with someone else—to share my life with you. It is this independence this relationship, not about gratitude for your help, but about caring and attraction.

In this revelation, I want to thank you for a lovely afternoon of relaxation and your wonderful company.

From,
Valencia Hollowstone
