I know as a newcomer it's very daunting to just jump into an RP with people and not know how things work, so these are here to show how we commonly RP.
These are NOT steadfast rules. No big deal if these are broken, this is just a general guide and reference.
General Tips
Across the board, no matter what your character is doing or saying, when in character, it's always best to try to:
Spoken Word in /say
Any words said out loud are typically done in the /say (/s) channel that is white by default. Anything typed in this channel will be regarded as things that your character is saying.
Physical Actions in /emote
Any physical actions, both grand and subtle, are typically done in the /emote (/e) channel that is purple by default. Anything typed in this channel will be regarded as an action your character is performing.
Spoken Word & Physical Actions in /emote
Great! Now what happens when you want to talk and do something? This usually happens in /emote (/e). Anything typed without being surrounded in quotation marks will be considered physical action performed by your character. Anything in between two quotation marks will be considered spoken by your character.
Out Of Character (OOC) chat
If you'd like to make a comment as yourself, not using your character, there is no defined channel of /say and /emote to use. You can be in either or to make a comment, as long as you surround your comment with double parenthesis. It is here you can feel free to use more informal text talk, etc.
Whipsers
Most of the time whispers are out of character (OOC), however some people will whisper to you in character (IC). Really, the only way to tell if you are confused and can't pick out which one it is, is to ask the person whether or not they're talking OOC or IC. Don't be shy! People are more than willing to tell you.
Group Chat
Group chat, /group (/g) which is the weird gold/orange color by default is most of the time out of character (OOC). However, sometimes we will be RPing in an area crowded with other players. In this case, we will use the group channel for RP. In this case, treat it like the Spoken Word & Physical Actions listed earlier. Anything typed without being surrounded in quotation marks will be considered physical action performed by your character. Anything in between two quotation marks will be considered spoken by your character. If you wish to talk OOC, just use the double parenthesis.
Guild Chat
Guild chat is always out of character (OOC). No need for the double parenthesis there! Anything you type there is assumed that you as a person are saying it, not any of your characters. It is here that respect is NECESSARY. Your characters can be rude, but you need to be respectful.
And that's the basics! Feel free to open up the guild roster on your guild tab in game (g key by default) and whisper any of the officers, senior officers, or myself if you have any more questions, need a better explanation, or would like to do some practice. I look forward to seeing you in game!
