Setting:
A lone Telvanni mage tower sat growing isolated in an ashen-white, volcanic southern coastal rock island off the southern tip of Vvardenfell. Muck Sponges and thick verdant marshmerrow reeds and saltrice bordered the island, covering otherwise bleak, sun baked, cracked mud. Thick roots dove in and out of the land, creating a marbled uneven surface dotted with lichen and mold. The salty air carried from the sea kissed every exposed surface. Murky waves lapped hungrily at a lone pier, it’s wooden pillars in a state of disrepair from disuse. Several mud crabs scurry about the muck. Heavy clouds cloaked the setting sun, coating the landscape in a sickly, yellow grey hue.
Nine dilapidated slave shanties clustered together, several piled unsteadily on top of each other in a grim tower. Three stood still, empty, lonely, silent. A new shipment would soon take care of that. The rotting scrap wood settlement lay tucked inside a hollowed out rocky alcove, just under the giant tower’s shadow. Several large, thick tower roots framed it’s edges, blocking the sun’s warm rays from reaching the musky wooden shacks.
One shack stood away, facing the others. Held aloof of the others on large stilts, a single thatched ramp allowing entry. A terrible creature called this home, carved on the door frame read the words, ‘Slave Guard Quarters’. Cold ruby eyes peered from under his cephalopod helm. Only one stood vigil at night. Only one was needed.
Within the tower, several retainers scuttled clutching their papers, tomes and notes through the musty halls. A day done, research to be put to rest on the mage lord’s desk. Leather faced woman unfastened jeweled headpins, weary eyed scribes slipped into fresh, slave cleaned bed linens. Guards patrolled the narrow rooted hallways, expelling any slow to leave slaves. It was time to rest.
Golden stitched, gemstone encrusted robes bathed in a milky dim candle light adorned a lone figure deep within the belly of the Tower. Ebony hair tied up into a bun, pinned up with a finely crafted, ruby eyed serpent hairpin. Seldom did this master of the tower leave these chambers, for it was the womb of his creations, ideas, fulfillment. Scorched, aged, blood stained stone chambers held the broken lifeless forms of his spell work. A lone frail argonian woman dragged the broken mess to a small underground sea pool adjacent to the chamber. Razor sharp teeth of captive slaughterfish made short work of the carcasses. Pearl white bones littered the cavern floor, remnants of suffering long past. Grime task completed, her glazed eyes turned to the Tower Master. Aged, cruel dunmer lips curled under the flickering, dying candle light.
One Called Imp dragged her weary limbs up from the caverns, doing her best to avoid any of the usual ornery Tower guards, and doing her best to keep her tail from touching the floor. While understanding her duties in the tower, and most not being particularly cruel to the slaves, years of being stationed in a dusty old mushroom left them more than a tad grumpy.
The day had not been unusual, an early morning filled with gentle handling of the fine linens of the mistresses and retainers. The texture of such fabrics against her scaly hands a small pleasure. Bed chambers had been scrubbed and carefully dusted. She had tended to the fine silver hair of one of the Mistress’s. Mundane, simple tasks that while tiring, Imp had no real disdain for. Having bore witness to the descaling or flaying of many other unwilling slaves, she knew best to keep her scaly hands moving and sharp teeth clamped shut.
Stepping out of the old Tower, she pulled her snout up. Salty sea air filled her flared nostrils. Another simple pleasure.
Allowing her dusty tail to drag, she hobbled over to the slave shanties. Cloudy, pregnant skies hung over head, a flame near the slave overseer the only beacon in the darkness. Distant thunder warned of an approaching storm. The overseer stood in front of his watchtower, waiting.
“Your late, imp. Again. Why are you late?” He spat at her through his helm in a rugged, venomous tongue.
Looking to her toes wisely, her voice soft and calm. “Overseer, the Mage Lord required my assistance with cleaning.” Imp never knew if others had been aware of the horrors their Lord studied under their feet. She only knew her death was assured should she utter even hint of information. Few ever even spoke to the Tower master, save for his adviser and traveling guests of importance. Other slaves had been tasked to him, but over the years, only Imp remained.
Reeling his huge arm back, he struck her across the face. “I don’t care. Sun down, you are under my watch.” Gesturing to the other shacks, “Now, you don’t see any of your fellow slaves out, do you?”
Crouching to her knee in subjugation, she sighs. “I do not overseer. Forgive my foolishness. I must move more quickly.”
“You know the penalty of being late.” His grizzled voice pierced the silence of the night, raising his hands to crack his knuckles. He turned his head to look off toward the distance, as if he heard something. Shaking his head, he continued, “Probably nothing. Move it lizard, I’ll deal with you soon enough.” He unfolded his arms before returning to the top of his watchtower. Clamoring to her feet, she hurried to her shack.
“Oh by my speckled nose…” She uttered wearily before collapsing onto her tattered bedroll. Truly, through it all, it was the Mage Lord’s tasks she dreaded most. Staining her soul along with her scales with her assisting in his grisly rituals.
The sole remainder in her shack, a goblin’s durzog leading her fellows into the goblin's pit. Soon, their beds will be refilled. Soon, she would have to feed them to the slaughterfish, just like the others. Shutting her serpentine eyes and rolling onto her side, she listened to the rain start to fall. Small droplets landing on her dirt covered scales. A small pleasure.
