He tends to be very perceptive of his surroundings and subtle details rarely go unnoticed. Forming relationships with new people however, has always been a difficult obstacle for him. He is often friendly and does not avoid conversation but he struggles with his immortality. Knowing many of the new people he meets he will ultimately outlive, makes him reluctant to form long term bonds.
Knowledge on the contrary is one of the most appealing aspects about immortality for Ares. Watching history unfold has been invaluable when it comes to experience let alone finding the opportunity to participate in it. With this interest in knowledge comes the interest in books and others interpretation on historical events. Ares believes knowledge is power but along those lines its useless unless its used.
Ares enjoys quiet walks or horseback rides and has a general appreciation for nature. Regardless of all his life experiences, he is and has always been fascinated by nature. He admires the resilience of it and the beauty that accompanies it. For him, nature has been one friend that's been with him from the beginning.
Ares holds a strong standard of right and wrong defined by years in which he had suffered and succeeded. In his lifetime he has amassed and lost wealth, having the opportunity to see life on both ends of the spectrum. His understanding of poverty is equally matched by his understanding of wealthiness. His viewpoint on war has been formulated much in a similar fashion. From seeing cruel rulers gain victory to righteous rulers doing the same, he has learned that both circumstances leave devastation in their quake. On a smaller scale, he is not afraid to do what he believes is right, even if his actions are controversial or dangerous.
From the outside looking in, someone might view Ares calm, cool and secretive person. His conduct might seem sincere but one might get the impression that he is hiding something. However, he is well versed in communication causing his secretive side to be easily overlooked. Ares doesn't treat the wealthy or renown much differently than he treats the poor or unknown. One can easily see him as being almost unbiased to either and as a result, it can cause people to interpret his unwillingness to acknowledge their title as a form of disrespect. The rich often see him as intolerable because he rarely delves in their ritualistic formalities, but the poor might see him in the exact opposite light.
Ares can also be unintentionally charming or insulting. When he does speak, he usually speaks his mind which can be a good thing or bad thing. If someone has a particular feature about their personality or appearance that he likes, he isn't afraid to comment on it. The gesture itself in his mind is nothing more than an observation he feels the need to say. However, the remarks can appear to be flirtatious or very forward. While on the contrary, if he doesn't like someone or a particular part of their personality, he too will make his disapproval known.
Comparing himself to other vampires, he can sometimes seem very rustic. While other vampires often choose a more sophisticated and witty approach, Ares is more direct. He is very intelligent, knowing many languages, dialects, cultures, lore, military strategies and various arts of combat. However, he revels more on the application of such knowledge, not the endless banter about various theories. Give him a good idea and he is more interested on how to implement it than talk about its possibilities. He greatly dislikes cocky and arrogant people, even if they are right. He also greatly dislike those who needlessly hurt others or exploit the helpless. When it comes to the law he is semi-law abiding. He believes the law has its strong points but he also see's the use in being a vigilante and branching where the law cannot. He does not approve of controlling behaviors and he will be first to endorse some ones free-will to choose over their hand being forced.
Ares greatest weakness is his immortality. Regardless of his strength in character, he struggles with a love hate relationship with himself. He loves seeing the world and how it changes and the colorful histories of it all unfolding before his very eyes. However, he hates watching the years go by, friends dyeing, memories remaining just memories and the images and horror being impossible to erase. As a result, Ares can often go into a reclusive state of mind where he almost tunes out his surroundings or becomes reclusive. For every good piece of knowledge he knows, there is equal if not greater level of evil knowledge that accompanies it. This weight pushes against his moral standard and creates an internal conflict that even after centuries of meditation, he has yet to understand this side-effect of immortality.

It is my goal to find interesting and uninteresting persons in Tamriel's history in hopes to allow others in the future to view their past. This chronicle will be about a subject who has no last name documented and therefore immediately peaked my interest. He goes by the name of Ares.
Ares was born sometime during the first Era. His exact date of birth is unknown but its believed to be sometime after Daggerfall defeated the Akaviri invasion. His parental dynasty is also unknown, but it is rumored that he came from a well versed family. The reasoning behind this rumor evolved around his esteemed infatuation with an high elf woman named Kara Verothi.
Not much is known about Kara Verothi but what we do know is that she was well versed in magic and had a unique interest in the Dwemer. It has also been rare that her name be mentioned without Ares being mentioned in close relation. With that said, it would be a safe argument to say that the two had a strong relationship with one another.
The rough history we know of Ares is that he was proficient as most Bosmer are in the art of the bow. Ares also left Valenwood with Kara in his early life and we have no documentation to determine whether or not he held the same religious belief as other Bosmer that would have otherwise bound him to Valenwood.
Much is unknown after the time he left, until the human uprising against the Alyeid Empire. Ares and Kara Verothi had allegedly planned an escape during this conflict amid the civil war as well. This is believed due to a ship manifest scheduled to leave modern day Cyrodiil. On the manifest belonging to the Mar' Danei, there was passage for two bought and paid for by someone titled Verothi. The earliest census we had found suggested that the Verothi family listed Kara as being the only living heir. As this being the conclusion, we can only assume that the manifest was referencing an escape for Kara and Ares, as the two undoubtedly saw the tensions rising in the empire. Here is where my research came to a unique turn. I discovered that Ares and Kara never boarded the Mar' Danei. Either that or the ship was destroyed which is unlikely since we have record of it being decommissioned years later.
The question that then arose was when and where did Ares and Kara go if they did not venture the ship during the Alessian Uprising. I've reviewed battle after battle and census after census and yet it almost appears as though they just vanished. I could believe that they possibly escape with other Alyeid's to safer regions and it would make sense for them to go back to Valenwood since it welcomed other Alyeid's with open arms. However, there is not a single record suggesting any of that took place.
I would have been entirely lost if it wasn't for the fact that the Alyeid's followed by the Alessian's, weren't good record keepers. I found a place where Ares was mentioned years later during a plague that swept through Cyrodiil around the First Era 478. Ares was mentioned among a large list of others trying to assist in breaking the plague. A noble effort and one I'm sure he was invaluable at, due to Bosmer having such a high resistance to disease. However, nowhere is Kara mentioned accompanying him. Again I thought I found a dead end until someone came forward to assist me in my historical research of various lineages. Luck favored me as I was given one of the plague victims journals, extremely lucky for it to not have been burned. Mind you I only waited over a year for this discovery to present itself to me.
In the journal the victim, Titus Regilian, mentioned a wood elf named Ares helping him. He stated that the plaque had slowed due to some herbs given to him by Ares and in exchange, the elf was inquiring about a high elf named none other than Kara Verothi. The victim said that Ares described her, but unfortunately the portions of the page after this revelation were somewhat withered. I had much difficulty trying to make out the rest of the journal but I passed it on to a friend of mine to see if he could do some restoration, as the book likely contained other valuable information for my other research.
I assumed that by this time Ares would have shown some age but in Titus's journal, he had described Ares as being youthful in appearance. This created a great puzzle for me as I now had to discover how this could be possible and if my records somehow got jumbled by misinformation. However, I went over all of my documentation and it was correct. Now the question that came to mind was, how could Ares appear so youthful after having lived for over few centuries. I would have assumed that this could have been a reference to someone else named Ares, however the mention of Kara Verothi was an obvious giveaway. I researched all possible alternatives for youth preservation magic but most of it was associated with high elves or those with high levels of magical attunement, which I was confident Ares did not have. That's when I considered the notion of Vampirism, which would explain the youthful appearance, long life and his invulnerability to the plague and disease. However, it did not explain the lack of pale skin or normal appearance that Ares had. The plagued victim didn't describe Ares as having any of those features accompanied by Vampirism so I almost ruled that notion out entirely.
However, like a good historian I did my research and attempted to process the information before ruling it out. I decided to turn my focus to studying vampire sightings in the area around the time that Ares had been seen. That was when my research again paid off and I found that a bounty hunter with uncanny prowess had been taking contracts in the area. The bounty hunter was described as a wood elf, proficient in the bow, black hair with antlers. The elf was classified as a medium build, youthful in appearance and was address as Ares. For the first time, I had been given an actual physical description of Ares, all thanks to the records of the Kingdoms of Skingrad. Interestingly enough there were reports of Alyeid remnants and bandit attacks in the area and their demise according to guard records was quite strange. Descriptions of victims being drained of their blood without so much as a wound being visible.
I now had a lead that Ares became a vampire but I was still stuck at how he became one and why. According to the records thus far he was still looking for Kara but had not been able to find her. Then I thought, perhaps Ares became a vampire because he likely knew that he would not live nearly as long as she would. Even during that time it was assumed that high elves lived the longest. Perhaps his transformation into a vampire was so he could continue his search for Kara without the fear of death finding him before he found her. Its a theory and one I'd like to think would fill in the blanks.
Since then I had only bits and pieces of the puzzle about Ares and devoted some of my search in other lineages. That's when I came across information I believe linked to the Diaries of Arlimahera. The documentation made reference to wood elf named Ares as an esteemed member of the dark brotherhood order. What made this so unique is that the documentation made reference to a handful of other dark brotherhood members. I thought that perhaps this could be someone adopting the name Ares, but again there was too much descriptive evidence of each member. The information suggested that Ares was in fact alive and well in the Second Era. I thought it nearly impossible simply because of how old he would be, but evidently the rumors that Vampirism grants immortality aren't entirely rumors at all, as we now know.
The last bit of remarkable research makes me almost believe that Ares could actually be alive even now. How exciting! After doing some studying in Windhelm I came across the same remarkable name, Ares. Again his name was mention but this time it was mentioned in the Second Era around 572. His name was mentioned as participating in the force led by Jorunn against the Akaviri. He along with countless other names and historical mentions were documented to have assisted in driving the Akaviri into the sea. An incredible historical find to discover that a possible vampire and member of the dark brotherhood took place in shaping Tamriel and perhaps assisting in the formation of the Ebonheart Pact. Unfortunately this record cannot guarantee that the Ares mentioned here was in fact the same Ares born in the First Era, but I believe its completely arguable. If in fact it is, I can only wonder if he ever succeeded in finding Kara Verothi. I will ensure to document further on this historical notation when I discover more credible evidence. Until then my research shall continue on other lineages.
