In the Barracks, Nalwynn Nightvale writes down his recent thoughts
Mordas, Sun's Height 27
People have often told me I am a humble Mer, and I take that as a complement. Some might say a man with humility does not a great leader make. And they may be right. Though, a Mer with a militaristic mind will always out do the one with the larger arrow.
I won the guard arena tournament. Not with my strength or speed. Yes, I did attempt a head-butt, or two, but upon sizing my foe, I realized I was neither strong nor fast enough to defeat them. It was they that defeated themselves. I just headed them in the right direction.
As I hope I have headed guardsman Hloriella the right direction. She thought herself to be weak. She was wrong.
Hloriella and I have developed a strictly professional relationship. I have enjoyed our morning training sessions. She is strong and determined and I do admire her for that. She is quick, both physically and of the mind. Though, there is a distance to her, I do not mind her not opening up to me. As I rarely open up to anyone.
Guardsman Afer is a different story. Of all the people; Man, Mer or Khajiit, I feel most at ease with him. Aye, his ego is mammoth sized, but I have seen him fight and his confidence is deserved. If I was to be called back to Cyrodiil, I would want men like him at my side.
Menelin, our good captain is an enigma. I have heard rumors, but I will not allow those to inhibit me from my duty. She is my Captain. She is our fair town's captain. The council favored her answer of one question. She only said what the rest of us said. But perhaps, she said it most eloquently. Or maybe there is something more. I will need to investigate this.
I also want to become more familiar with the second in command, the Khajiit, Tigrus. For a while, I thought he was next in line to be captain. He is a formidable presence, towering over me like a giant. However, I do question his policing tactics. It is not my style to settle a disturbance of the peace by starting a street brawl with the assailant. I could be wrong though. They were both Khajiits and maybe this is their way of things. I will look in to this.
I originally came to Vulkwasten to help take care of Krimie and her children in their father's abscence. Although, with friends like Nelliel, Alijham and Afer, Krimie is in good company.
Now, with recent events, I feel as though I have a greater purpose for this small village.
