Varandil Arcanus was a well-established sorcerer and diplomat within the Aldmeri Empire. His marriage was arranged and secured to an Altmer woman of a lower class named Amarwen to raise her status. During his diplomatic travels through Tamriel, Varandil fell in love with a Breton servant girl, Liza. He visited her when he was able and sent her finances when she became pregnant. Amarwen became increasingly jealous and suspicious at his departures and demanded to have a child. When she gave birth to her daughter Xandra, Varandil was racked with guilt knowing his son was living without a father. He purchased Liza's freedom and brought her into his house to care for baby Xandra. The truth about Liza and her half-breed son quickly was revealed to Amarwen, but she was unable to sever the Breton from Varandil's care. Varandil's reputation was sullied by rumors of the affair as an esteemed member of Altmer society. The boy named Arandil was despised by Amarwen and mostly regarded as an inferior, bastard child by the upper caste. But he managed to become a mage by his own prowess particularly adept in the healing arts and developed a bond with his half-sister.
