Formative Experiences and Influences

Baelinor was born in Anvil, the second son of a tanner and a tailor. He and his family were part of the immigrant population in Cyrodiil that slowly grew during the peace and stability of the Second Empire.

A Colovian through and through, Baelinor has only superficial connections to the culture of Valenwood Bosmer. His worldview is heavily colored by an idealistic view of the Second Empire as a force for tolerance, growth and peace across Tamriel.

The family's history in the Imperial Province goes back nearly 600 years to the end of the First Era, when Baelinor's great-grandfather left Valenwood to join Reman III's war on Morrowind. The adventurous Bosmer was able to settle in Colovia after serving in the forces under Prince Juilek's command at the famous Battle of Ald Marak.

The family wholeheartedly adopted Colovia's military tradition, and the eldest son of each generation since has served in the Imperial Legion. With his older brother Gwynolrin becoming an accomplished bowman dedicated to preserving Cyrodiil, Baelinor was given the opportunity to explore other pursuits.

Baelinor has a genuinely kind and gentle disposition. As a boy, he helped his parents attend to their business as clothiers, but he always knew healing was his true calling. He became a devotee of Stendarr before age 20, and began to study the basics of Restoration and Alchemy with the help of clergy. This training persisted alongside his work at the shop until he was finally accepted into the Mages Guild.

It was in the Guild that Baelinor began to pursue Restoration as his primary skill. He also gained access to the guildhall's vast library, and fell in love with all manner of books. Whenever he has free time, you will most likely find him with his nose buried in a tome describing the many customs and cultures across Tamriel, or a history detailing the great achievements of the Empire.

Leaving Cyrodiil

Spoiler
The loss of the Emperor Varen and the seizure of Chorrol by Covenant armies sent the entire region into a panic. The formation of the Aldmeri Dominion and their strike deep into the West Weald led to suspicion and “reprisals” against elves all over Cyrodiil.

When Castle Brindle was lost to the Dominion, an angry mob attacked Baelinor's parents in the middle of the night, killing his elderly father and confiscating the family shop in the name of “the people of Anvil.”

When Anvil declared itself a “free city,” the Mer remaining in and around the city saw the opportunity to leave Cyrodiil on one of the many unaligned ships coming into port.

Baelinor discussed the issue with his colleagues at the Mages Guild, and decided he would arrange passage to Daggerfall for his mother, himself, and a group of others they had been living with. To many born and raised in Cyrodiil, the Covenant's promise of a return to Reman values seemed like the best chance for a better life after the war.

After months of pooling enough money to pay for the trip, the group set out for Glenumbra on an unassuming merchant ship. They had not even reached Stros M'Kai when they were intercepted by Covenant privateers. Claiming the ship was aiding enemies of the Covenant, they launched a ruthless attack.

Despite the best efforts of the crew and passengers, there was little to be done in the face of such overwhelming force. The privateers made off with almost everything of value on board, severely damaged the mast and sails of the ship, and left behind a mass of dead and wounded bodies.

The survivors drifted for days, and each day more of the wounded would slip beyond Baelinor's healing abilities. His mother was one of the dozen who died at sea due to his plan's dismal failure.

The crippled ship had drifted southeast with the current, and was finally approached by a Dominion patrol vessel off the coast of Auridon. Upon discovering the terrible state of the ship and its crew, the sailors took the few survivors aboard and made for the port of Skywatch.

This is how Baelinor, a Bosmer of the Empire, came to live under the Altmer Queen's rule.

A New Beginning

Spoiler
Baelinor arrived at the Mages Guild in Skywatch, where he was given temporary residency in Auridon. Trying to make a living whichever way he could, he hawked his skills as a healer and clothier. He was now without direction, trying to find the just path in a world gone mad. Was he right to believe in the Covenant? What are the true motivations of the Altmer, and what do the Bosmer have to gain from the Dominion?

Baelinor determined the best way to answer these questions was to explore the land of his ancestors. The only ship willing to take the penniless healer to Valenwood was bound for Velyn Harbor. From there, Baelinor made the long trek overland to the Thalmor embassy in Elden Root, where he sought permission to travel, work and live in the Dominion by applying for asylum.

The journey revealed many otherworldly dangers facing the people of Valenwood. After encounters with Daedra worshipers, the appearance of a lich in the small town of Vulkwasten, and even vampires compromising the security of the Thalmor embassy, Baelinor now prays for Stendarr's vigilance in keeping the innocent safe.

He currently spends most of his time in Elden Root, making use of the Mages Guild's vast library to study vampires and other abominations. He has also been making frequent trips to Vulkwasten in order to keep abreast of possible developments there.
