I'll try to keep this brief, but that probably won't work out too well.

In the past few days, a few things have been brought to my attention within the frame of the Town Guard. Among these things have been the lack of Guard events, communication, and the lack of an admirable uniform.

This hadn't been a massive problem as of recently, primarily due to the fact that the Guard has been barren for quite some time. Since appointment, however, I have been attempting to spawn ideas to make the Town Guard brimming with activity and an enjoyable atmosphere; this ranges from training events to full-blown Guard events that would put much more emphasis on things such as ranks and duties. To do this, however, I would like some feedback from the community. I can't create something somebody will look at and enjoy, if they're all running in fear from the Frankenstein-style mesh of God awful clothing I put together and claim as a uniform.

SO.

Give me your input! What would you prefer for the new Town Guard uniform? We've had several simple suggestions, as well as complex, and I'd like some suggestions from both Guards, citizens, and officials alike.

So far, the most popular suggestion we've had is the regular Altmer style; this has been argued as one of the more lore-friendly outfits, due to the Three Banners War and whatnot. This issue stems from the fact that, somehow, the previous Guard's uniform was substituted for a full-Dunmer style outfit, which doesn't really work well in a Dominion zone.

If you're feeling super-creative, go ahead and put some event suggestions on here, as well. While I do have my own ideas to begin with, I'd love to hear from the community!

It's a bosmeri town, why not bosmeri uniforms?

Think Altmeri style is a good call. Maybe with own color scheme, too. Can always use the AD motif for higher ranks.

Are we allowed to use colors other then Blue?
Before we had to stick to the blue palette to match our name.

If so, I say bosmer armor. It is a bosmer town.

I'm for Bosmeri uniforms... and either blue or green, as we usually do. The thing is our tabard is blue, so I think our uniforms should either match or be a neutral color—black, silver, or something. And then traditionally our council wears green.

The issue with the Aldmeri style is that we're essentially a Clanguard. Not a Dominion guard. Not Thalmor. Clanguard. And so having the Aldmeri style may suggest we're Dominion offiliated. Which is something we don't want to necessarily do for guild politics reasons that are very complicated that I don't really want to get into.

So I do suggest using Bosmeri uniforms or some mix of motifs so that we're not confused for something we're not, especially by others in the AD RP community.

I know that our guild tabard is blue (Since our name is Blue Skooma) but since it's always been used more as just the Guard Uniform than an actual Guild Tabard anyway, would it be difficult to change the color to match the uniform once it's put together? So that it looks more like an actual Guard uniform than a Guild Tabard being also used as a guard tabard? lol If that makes sense. Even the tree on the tabard matches the tree in Vulkwasten, which makes it the perfect uniform to represent the guard.

Although, if you used neutral colors for the actual uniforms, like greens and/or browns/tan then that pop of blue on the tabard may look nice.

Just wondering! :)

Oh and I agree on bosmer style for the uniform. The medium and heavy looks nice but you can throw in some extra styles to make it look more formal or professional.

Are we really a clan though?
I think we are more like a...caravan of sorts that has settled in Vulk. I mean, we have no clan leader, nor are any of our toons related in a clan like structure.

Agreed. Find is a member of his own clan. Most people just live in town. They don't associate themselves with any real clan

We are a collection of highschool students living in a town and wreaking it.
But anyway I feel something like bosmer motifs would be good for the guard uniforms since it fits the area we are in well.

We can definitely change the tabard if need be. We can make it black and white or something more neutral so it goes with armor colors.

People get mad when you give yourself arbitrary power over them. So I try to define our guard as "clanguard" so that people don't have to obey them if they're not in the guild. Because we can't tell people how to RP.

Anyway, it's a guild political term I've been trying to use to keep us neutral and prevent people from seeing us as trying to impose our rules onto them if they try to RP in/around Vulkwasten.

The point still stands, we are not Dominion affiliated at it may be wise to make sure the uniform doesn't make us look Dominion affiliated. I suppose "militia" would be more appropriate than "clanguard," but I'd like people to come into town and know that they are some sort of militia, but not necessarily given Dominion power.

Nature-like colors would fit the bosmeri theme. Like um..tan/brown uniform with green tabard (instead of the blue background) or vice-versa. You'd have to get in there and play with the colors but trying to keep is nature/bosmer theme I think would really fit with our RP.

Hmm, I suggest we find a better term then clan as it is very misleading IC wise. As Find pointed out, we have actual clans withen the guild, and several very, very individualist families who have no allegiance to the town whatsoever. OOC it is fine, but IC...it creates a huge discrepancy. I believe we can find something more fitting for our unique situation.

No, we shouldn't suggest we own Vulk, we are simply settlers and villagers who live there. Calling the guard a Militia would be a great idea I think, as it suggests it is a force of the villagers, which it is, yet has no actual authority outside of the village.

If you can find a better term, then by all means. I'd also like to say though, it is really difficult when people ask Elsy who she is, and people say the "Treethane," to not say she's not the Treethane of a clan-like group, because, if I tie her to "Treethane of Vulkwasten," that gives her arbitrary power that I don't want to give her over other characters.

So, that's a problem I do need a solution to. What would Elsy's title be? What is she the "Treethane" of? What do I tell non-guildies when they ask?

I'll dig up some terms and see if I can find anything that will fit. Or ask the walking encyclopedia that is my husband. If anyone has any suggestions, throwing them in would be good too.

Hmm, good point! Currently, treethane doesn't make much sense, so she needs a title that suggest she has some power to our villagers, but not to Vulk as a whole. Elder wouldn't work because she aint no elder. Perhaps a spiritual leader of some kind...hmm. The closest thing I can think of that would be a general, vague enough title is something akin to a caravan leader, or one who leads migratory/ mobile/ traveling camps or troops. An elected figurehead that led us all to Vulk and still holds sway.

She was honestly just called "Lady Nightwind," when she was elected, or at least, was asking people to address her as such... until some of the SCC started to refer to her as "Treethane" and it stuck... I have a feeling it's going to be very, very difficult to get that to change.

Maybe "Treethane" still works, and she would just technically head the "militia," in tandem with the council (Marshals included)? So she'd be Treethane of Vulkwasten's Militia? Hm, but then that starts to sound like we're all militia and no residents. She's really more like a clanmother... but that has Khajiiti implications. And suggests we're a clan.

I mean, she tells everyone that Treethane isn't an official title now, anyhow. I guess I could just keep going with that and do as I've been, mentioning that she handles a lot of rotmeth production and trade in Vulkwasten, when people ask what she does, which doesn't give her too much power over people. It just then gets awkward when she's called "Treethane" by the guild, and people think she owns the place.

Doyenne, maybe. Archon.

Gotta admit though, I like the sound of Treethane still...
"Unofficial Treethane of Vulkwasten," sounds a bit better to me. Which is how she will introduce herself if people call her Treethane. It implies power without making things official, so she can't impose things onto people not in the guild?

Yeah, Treethane as a title holds a heavy implication of ownership, as 'Thane' generally means holding a region or land. Clanmother wouldn't work either, as there is no clan to be the matron of so to speak. At least, not the village (guild) as a whole.

You can choose to keep it as just an empty title, but I'd suggest maybe fading it out as a previous title.

You could try to go back to Lady Nightwind since you're right, she's not really the Treethane of a town or clan or anything like that.

Caravan kind of makes it sound like we travel a lot and are not really settled anywhere. You could say she's the Treethane of our Community or Tribe maybe? Are we a tribe? Silly words getting in the way.

Lady Nightwind, Doyenne or Archon, and the Council of ......

The Treethane of .....

Mitila does sound very formal. Guard seems more suited to a smaller place but I don't know. Ugh, we need more words to work with here. XD

Yeah, it's hard. Because tribe sounds like clan. Community implies the entirety of Vulkwasten. Like I said I'll probably use Doyenne then say, "Unofficial Treethane of x," so that way people can keep calling her that, and she'll just explain the title isn't official (which is what I've been doing anyway) and that she's more a Doyenne.

And yeah, but then Guard implies we may be Dominion related. Militia helps us separate from that.

Legitimately though, "Residents of Vulkwasten," I feel is fine. Because you don't claim power or ownership of a town just by living in it. You're just there.

*AHEM*

Anyways we totally hijacked Kashya's thread, so...

PERSONALLY I LIKE BOSMERI UNIFORMS, AS FIND, HLOR, AND LU SEEM TO AGREE. TSALA MENTIONED DOMINION STYLED MOTIFS AND I THINK YOU DID TOO BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER BECAUSE THAT WAS PAGES AGO, BUT I ADVISED AGAINST ALL-DOMINION SINCE PEOPLE MIGHT CONSIDER THE GUARD AS DOMINION-OFFICIAL, WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, WE'VE DECIDED WE ARE A MILITIA. WE CAN TOTES BLEND THE STYLES THOUGH, OR OTHER STYLES TOO.

AS FOR COLORS PEOPLE SEEM TO LIKE BLUE, GREEN/TAN/BROWN (FOR VALENWOOD), AND NEUTRALS (BLACK/SILVER). I CAN CHANGE THE GUILD TABARD COLORS IF NEEDED.

And then we went on this tangent where we decided, Elsy is the town Doyenne, aka "Unofficial Treethane of Vulkwasten," the guard is a militia, and the people in our guild are called Residents of Vulkwasten.

I agree with the blue/green/brown colors. Personally, I'm a fan of tans and browns, very subdued warm or cold colors that suggest the jungle yet blend well with most armors. Unless of course your armor is hot pink. There is no hope for that.

Some actually have suggested Ancient Elf, which I'm honestly on the fence with. Ancient Elf was one of my first considerations alongside the remaining Dominion styles, but I really found myself leaning towards the Dominion styles in favor of the Ancient Elf styles.

On another note, I found Khajiit styles considerable as well; the only thing I really had conflict with were the helmets, since not everybody wants to go running around in cat-masks. Otherwise, I find the style aesthetically pleasing. It's really just the helmets.

I think maybe something along the lines of military-issue uniforms/armor? Basically just get uniforms that are of the three races style of the dominion and have them choose and dye it some good ol' colors, andlore-wise, could be surplus material that the Dominion had to sell off.

I like this idea. Standard issue dominion armor sold cheaply by the military
TheMulletWhispererMay 07, 2016

The problem with that is the fact that governments and militaries generally don't sell off surplus gear during wartime. That'd be an outright waste of resources that could be put to better use than selling it at a loss.
BhidulMay 07, 2016

As that is true, I think that it still could be possible. Since there are NPC Dominion guards with racial-based Dominion uniforms, I'm sure exceptions could be made due to our group being the standing guard of Vulkwasten IC-ly. If the guards all across the AD zones have 'em, it's not a waste of resources.

Let say something like this:
To skimp on armor prices, our clan guards have signed an official deal with the aldmeri dominion for their surplus armor. We get AD armor, and the reason to wear them, and we pay just enough to contribute to the Wartime economy. It might work as an idea.

Plus, It should also be noted that the bosmer armors have a very specific style that not everyone would be fond of.

We aren't a clan guard anymore, as mentioned earlier in the thread. Semantics aside, we should not wear AD armor, we are not AD guards. This would only confuse rpers as well as other guilds who rp with us.
As for IC reasons, I can't see the AD handing over surplus supplies to the citizens (not even leadership) of Vulk. The return would be ridiculously paultry.

What are the thoughts on Khajiiti armor? The other two armor styles tend to cause conflict: The Altmer style would cause concern regarding affiliation, and there are IC ethical concerns regarding Bosmer (There are those who disagree on wearing bones for armor). So, Khajiiti is the remaining style. Thoughts?

I believe it was already decided earlier in this thread that the dominion style was too formal to our guard. We want them to match the town we rp in, which is a bosmer town. So it would make sense to use bosmer style. And of course, not everyone is going to like the uniform. You can't please everyone.

Maybe you could use the bosmer style as the main armor but allow certain parts to be changed, like the arm crops and belt?

Honestly if you let people change all of it because they just don't like it or some parts don't fit their style then everyone's going to wear something different. Maybe set up two different uniforms for them to choose from?

Ahh, that may be doable. Two separate armor choices would give everyone a little more leeway in terms of uniform preference. Since Altmer is out of the debate, however, the remaining options are Bosmeri and Khajiiti, unless a non-racial motif were used. Would those be suitable in terms of dual-options? They do vary largely in style, but distinguishing the status of Guard will ultimately be decided on the presence of a tabard, anyways. I'd rather get a bit more input from the community, however.

So, ultimately, my question to the community is: Would two different uniform options seem too unorganized?

Nah, I don't think so. As long as it matched in color and was specific to said uniform IE: Dis piece with dat piece....etc.
Would be no different then picking between light or heavy styles....just more accommodating to the villagers wearing them.

et say something like this:
To skimp on armor prices, our clan guards have signed an official deal with the aldmeri dominion for their surplus armor. We get AD armor, and the reason to wear them, and we pay just enough to contribute to the Wartime economy. It might work as an idea.

Plus, It should also be noted that the bosmer armors have a very specific style that not everyone would be fond of.

I agree, but the armor should be restricted to the AD racial styles. It's kinda weird seeing armor styles different than the Dominion's mixed in in my opinion. If we did have the armors, they should be kept the styles of the three races and should be strongly suggested that each person, according to their race, should wear the matching armor. Other non-Dominion races should pick ones that fit closely to their races. Here's just an opinionated list:

-Pact Races:
Nords - Altmer
Dunmer - Altmer
Argonians - Bosmer

-Covenant Races:
Bretons - Altmer
Orsimer - Bosmer or Altmer
Redguard - Khajiit or Altmer

-Dominion Races:
Khajiit - Khajiit
Bosmer - Bosmer
Altmer - Altmer

I agree on the fact that the armors should be restricted to the Alliance motifs. But I really wonder: What does everyone think about some neutral motifs? like mercenary or imperial

PS: yes, I know imperial is a racial style, but in it's essence the armor looks cheap, easy to make and protective. How about we have something which uses imperiak chest and various Dominion racial pieces for the town armor? It would also be easier to distinguish rank as the imperials have those cool plumed helms and such

Aye, I've discussed neutral motifs quite often with other parties, but ultimately decided against it; none of them really suit the style we're going for. Imperial is likewise, really. I even tried out the Imperial style myself, for a few days, but finally decided that it was perhaps too unsuited, likewise. In essence, we're really going for uniforms that capture the town's aesthetic principals as well as matching lore. Bosmeri styles come in first, with Khajiiti uniforms also being a viable option as a "suggested alternative." If there are no ongoing concerns, I may go ahead and get to work on color schemes for these styles; however, any additional input will definitely be considered and appreciated.

Bosmer is the worst by far, have you seen heavy bosmer armor? Its litterally burlap and scraps of metal and bone. Its ugly and overall looks like it was thrown together by savages. Just my two cents :D

Kisven, those are the Tier One uniforms you are likely thinking of. The Tier Two-Three uniforms look considerably more organized; the Tier Two uniforms, if I am not mistaken, are the ones used by Bosmer Dominion Guard NPCs. The picture I'm attaching in this spoiler is Kashya in Heavy Bosmer uniform, Tier Three.

Its true. It may also be a repellant for people who want to be guards, but dont want to wear bosmer armor

Bah. They'll only have to wear the uniform on-duty anyways. And if they don't want to wear it, we'll just glue it on them and make them wear it 24/7. Take that, rebels.

UPDATE

I've ultimately decided that the guard uniform will ultimately be set with the option to choose from either Bosmer or Khajiiti styles. I, however, am no good with color schemes.

I have set the color schemes as black, brown, and green to reflect on the town's influential scheme. If there are any critiques, however, throw them at me; I'm all for opinions, and I suck at colors anyways.

These are Tier Three gear sets, only including medium and heavy styles. Light armor, as well as tier one and two styles, are excluded from this viewing.

The khajiit colors look far to pink and pale. Try to find Browns and greens that are more neutral and less Easter eggy.

The bosmer heavy looks fine, but the medium's green stands out. Hmm.

That would be great. When I'm on later tonight, I'll be sure to make a few extra sets to play around with.

I am so sorry I am late with this, but what if we made the main part of it merchandise armor and allowed customization for gloves and boots for those khajiit or others who like their claws or nails to show?
KashyaMay 10, 2016

Both the Bosmer and Khajiiti styles have exposed feet and hands, if that's an IC concern. Merchandise armor? Did you mean mercenary armor?

Damn my auto correct! I did, yes...but was saying merc and didn't notice it. My concern wasn't for the hands and feet though, I was just offerin an idea I has since that armor looks so nice and fancy without looking like a Dominion military uniform.

I agree with Racc on the colors... They seem kinda pinkish and less-metallic than they should be. Maybe a darker steel color or iron-ish?
