Character Name: Aeliester, prefers Al

Race: Altmer

Age: Seventy-two

Sex: Male

Marital Status: Widower

Sexual Orientation: Claims to be straight and although for the most part he does prefer women, he has been intimate with men.

Affliction: None

Physical Appearance: Standing at six feet and nine inches, Al is built more like a soldier than one that handles delicate musical instruments. As a teen he was very lanky, more akin to a string bean than a mer. However working in his father’s smithy proved to put on a considerable amount of muscle mass to which he still retains. Carrying heavy instruments from town to town helped as well. He keeps his chestnut colored hair short and in an Imperial style, though it does curl at the ends much to his frustration. His eyes are an off-white that stand out against his tanned skin. He feels as if he has a baby face for someone of his age, thus he normally sports some facial scrub

Distinguishing Features: Calloused fingertips come from years upon years of work as a trained musician. Although he has no notable markings on his face, there is a small scar on his lower lip, a visible memory of a misunderstanding between himself, a married woman, and her none too pleased brute of a husband. His ears are pierced and he often sports small earrings. His backside is covered with the remnants of a lashing from his superior officers having disobeyed orders.

Likes: Music, sketching [particularly people], witty conversation, baked goods, teaching those with a genuine passion to learn, romantic gestures, hard alcohol, traveling, being sexually intimate, singing, poetry, reading, archery [though he's terrible at it], card and dice games

Dislikes: Greasy food, crows, entitlement, those with a lack of compassion, being unable to voice his thoughts and opinions, broken strings on his instruments, his father, being cooped up inside for too long, rainy days, consequences, those without a zest for life, moths

Strengths: Musical and vocal talent, brute strength, charm, street smart, adept with a broadsword and shield

Weaknesses: Has difficulties taking orders at times, isn’t always logical in his decisions, prefers to live in the moment, is distracted easily as he tends to drift into his own thoughts and daydreams, moody, his love of drink borders alcoholism as he self-medicates

Aeliester is, for the most part, a lax mer, preferring to take it one day at a time. He possesses a good sense of humor and will often joke about his own faults. If he doesn’t like something or someone, he makes little show of hiding it. He's a very flirtatious mer, whether intentional or not, he likes to make others feel good about themselves and enjoys the returned attention. Though his compliments may be genuine, his romantic feelings normally aren't.

Background

Early Life
Born just outside of Vulkhel Guard, Aeliester was born to a blacksmith and a barmaid. Though the small family did not have an excess of wealth, they were comfortable in their means and managed small luxuries. His childhood was largely uneventful. A promising student, the young mer had dreams of becoming a renowned writer, a playwright, the possibilities were endless. However as he aged, it was evident such would not come into fruition. His father generally disapproved of how he poured over books, let alone any bit of printed word he could come across. He viewed too much school as an excess when one could be working and making honest coin. Feeling as though reading and basic mathematics were enough, Al’s father pulled him from school at a young age to apprentice at his smithy. He has the equivalent of an eighth grade education. The work was brutal, tedious, and he had little passion for his work. Rather, the highlight of his day came from evenings helping serve at the tavern his meek-mannered mother was employed at. It wasn’t in the drunken louts nor endless dishes, but rather the bard that took up residence in the hole-in-the-wall bar.

Grizzled and with a bushy beard that rivaled any Nord, the stout Bosmer introduced himself as ‘Bear.’ Nothing more, nothing less. And though gruff in his appearance, the melodies strung from his lute could bring even the most hard-headed warrior to tears. Aeliester was immediately drawn in, forgetting duties in favor of listening to the entrancing tunes. Gradually, the more he spent time with Bear, the closer they became until the weathered bard offered an apprenticeship seeing his obvious passion for music.

To no surprise, Al’s father was furious over his son’s desire to become a ‘pansy’ of a musician. Thus he gave him a choice, finish his work as a blacksmith and live a respectable life, or live the vulgar, poor life of a wandering minstrel without the comfort or support of his family. Hurt at such a drastic ultimatum, Aeliester chose the latter.

Middle Years
The young Altmer proved to be a natural musician, finding music where ever he went, whether intentional or not. Although first trained on Bear's own lute, he gradually graduated onto a lyre, and then his favorite instrument, the harp. The two men lived a fairly bohemian lifestyle, traveling throughout Dominion territory and making enough coin to live on in open air markets, taverns, and where ever else they could find a crowd large enough for their songs. Though poor, Aelieister learned to value experiences rather than materialistic goods. The two travelled with one another for years upon years, forming a lifelong friendship, Al viewed Bear as a father figure. However feeling as though he had nothing left to teach, the old mer bequeathed his instruments to his student in favor of retiring to Grahtwood.

Growing weary of his lifestyle, Al settled in Skywatch tutoring the children of affluent families in music. He enjoyed his work, though not so much the ear-splitting screech of a chord played wrong. When not teaching, he would often take his lute down to the marketplace and play for those shopping, earning a bit of extra coin. It was at such a market he met another creative soul, a young, red-headed Altmer whom often set up an easel and sketched those bustling to and fro. Just as he, she came every week and sat in the same spot with the same set of stubby pencils and the same wrinkle in her nose as she concentrated on a particular piece. If he didn't believe in love at first sight before then, he certainly did now. It didn't take long for the two creative souls to strike up a friendship and in time, much to his delight, a romantic relationship. They married the next Spring.

Later Years / Now
Married life suited Al and he found himself truly content with where he was in life. There was even talk of the possibility of children in the near future. Living in a city with a port, however, has it'd downfalls. As such, the spread of disease or in this case, the Knahaten Flu. Mortality rates were high and it was common to know at least one in a family or circle of friends that had succumbed to the dreadful disease. In his case, it was his wife. Though married for a few short, blissful years, Aeliester was devastated by the loss of who he considered the love of his life and best friend as well as a constant source of inspiration. The next few months were a bleary haze, he had no motivation to play nor teach others the beauty of instrumental.

Finding himself at a recruiting station for the Dominion and feeling as if he had little in nothing to live for, he joined as a common foot solider and was promptly put through training and sent out. His size and build proved to be a great strength, though he was often in some sort of trouble for not following orders correctly or ignoring them altogether in favor of what he found to work better. Getting a lashing did seem to help in his thinking and he grew to become more lax, becoming a favorable member of the division he was placed in.

Having renewed his contract several times, he just finished his last and has no plans to return to the military. Rather, he's seeking new endeavors that have landed him in Vulkwasten.

How did they get here: Al was stationed with a few others close to Vulkwasten at a false report of a rogue werewolf as it turned out to be a very shaggy and very dirty dog. As that was to be his last 'mission' of sorts, he figured he'd stick around a while until figuring out his next plan of action.
