Physical Description

Portrait

Tall for a Breton and well-built, years of travel have weathered Matheson's features and darkened his skin with sun damage. Often lacking shelter and finding himself in the wild places of the world, he has taken to shaving his head and beard in order to stave off fleas and other parasites. Most notably, Matheson's left eye is pure white while the skin on that side of his face is marred with a series of faded scars. At first glance it appears that his eye is milky from injury but on closer observation it can be seen that his eye has been replaced with a large pearl.

A consummate knight and warrior, Matheson carries himself with the grace and confidence of a well-trained fighter though years of battle and injury have affected his posture and gait somewhat. On his arms and chest are graven tattoos in the Wyrd witches style.

Personality

Exceptionally pragmatic and logical, nearly to the point of being coldly aloof, Matheson has no time or tolerance for nonsense. Though not completely joyless, he is very succinct and even curt at times- preferring to cut right to the heart of the matter and bypass any ceremony. Matheson reserves almost all warmth and mirth for loved ones and close friends and even then such things are usually expressed solely in private or during unguarded moments.

Despite his stony exterior, Matheson is charitable, sincere, hard working and earnest in his ideals and beliefs. He strives to do good and make a positive difference in the world with no expectation of recognition or reward. His code-of-honor and oaths as a knight dictate that he always adhere to the rule of law, defend the defenseless, and meet tyranny with justice even in the face of impossible odds. Those same oaths and codes, however, also demand that he not tolerate any affront to his honor or reputation.

Strengths:

Matheson is wholly dependable and can easily be relied upon. His word is his absolute bond and he can be expected to tell the truth even to his own detriment. He is a well-rounded combatant, equally skilled in melee and magical means of warfare as well as the healing arts and the Restoration school of magic.

An anointed knight in the Order of the Golden Anvil- a knightly order centered around the worship of the divine Zenithar- Matheson is as much a priest and artificer as a warrior. As such he can craft all manner of magical weapons, armor, potions and tools given that he has the materials and facilities to do so.

Called The Pearl of Deepsight, his magical prosthetic eye, crafted by his own hand from a large Dreugh pearl, augments his vision and allows him to focus in on objects telescopically as well as discern physical imperfections or corruption. Most often used when crafting items he can also utilize his augmented sight to find weak points in arms, armor, structures, and to diagnose sickness or wounds in living creatures. This effect is not passive and must be activated and maintained with concentration. Spiritual or magical corruption can be discerned but the source cannot (i.e. vampirism, lycanthropy, Daedra possession) and since most beings are flawed in that way to some degree he does not use it to judge one's character.

The tattoos he bears were a gift bestowed upon him by a Wyrd coven and make him completely immune to vampirism and lycanthopy though they offer no protection against their powers beyond that.

Weaknesses:

Matheson's honesty and code-of-honor are both his strength and weakness. These traits make him somewhat predictable and can be manipulated to put him at a disadvantage. Often, this means that Matheson must do things "the hard way" when a little white lie or a bit of guile are called for. His code and values are non-negotiable, meaning he is completely inflexible when it comes to debating the merits of one course of action over another if one choice demands he compromise his creed.

Self-sacrificial to a fault, Matheson tends to be eager to martyr himself for a righteous cause- another trait that can be easily manipulated.

Matheson is sensitive to any slight against his character, honor, or reputation and will go so far as resorting to combat in order to rectify the matter.

When his Pearl of Deepsight eye is not in use, Matheson is blind on his left side and has poor depth perception and peripheral vision.

Why is your character in Dominion territory? How did they get here?

As a knight errant Matheson travels across Tamriel righting wrongs and protecting the innocent. While he is loyal to the Daggerfall Covenant and would not betray it, he is more concerned with aiding common people and dealing with the Daedric threat. Specifically, Matheson came to Dominion territory when he heard rumors of an outbreak of lycanthropy in Bosmer lands- an evil he feels duty-bound to combat.

Background

Born in Fell's Run to Sir Jaspar Hawke II and Dame Lindra Hawke, Matheson Hawke was raised by his grandfather Sir Jaspar The Elder after his parents succumbed to the Knahaten Flu when he was ten years old. Educated and trained under the tutelage of the Zenithar priesthood, Matheson was groomed for knighthood at an early age and served as his grandfather's squire during campaigns against the Reachmen.

By the age of twenty Matheson had learned all of the prerequisite skills to become a Knight of the Order of the Golden Anvil- namely combat, restoration magic, smithing, enchantment, and alchemy. After being dubbed and initiated, Matheson embarked on his first errant journey during which he had several adventures; most notably battling a pack of rogue werewolves alongside a coven of Wyrd Sisters. During the fight against the pack leader, Matheson's left eye was clawed out and he was gravely wounded. Healed by the witches, he was given special tattoos on his chest and arms that would serve to protect him from the afflictions of vampirism and lycanthropy.

Taking time to recuperate from his injuries, Matheson spent the next few years honing his crafts to become a respectable artificer. During this time he researched various ways of returning or healing his damaged sight, eventually settling on crafting a magical prosthetic. He found the perfect raw material for his prosthetic eye after answering a call to arms to battle an infestation of Dreugh in Stormhold in which he battled a matron. The killing blow dealt against the monstrous creature opened the belly of the dreugh matron, wherein Matheson found a large flawless pearl. Returning home with the treasure more years were spent crafting and perfecting what would become the Deepsight Pearl. Though by no means a perfect solution to his handicap, the magical eye was a major boon to his craftsmanship and supplemented his vision in day-to-day life.

Feeling suitably skilled, equipped, and experienced at this time in his life; Matheson sought to put his abilities to good use. Eschewing and rejecting the petty politics and warmongering of High Rock and their war for the Imperial province, Matheson instead set his enhanced sights upon battling the Daedric invasion and their Dark Anchors- vowing to protect the common people against this potent evil. This quest would take him all across Tamriel and would pit him against all manner of adversary and hardship. Adventures too numerous to recount here would follow and are still to come as Sir Matheson Hawke, Knight of the Order of the Golden Anvil, traverses the land meting out justice, defending the innocent, and banishing darkness in the name of righteousness.

Approved 6/13/2017

I'm going to approve this, however, it is vital that it's understood we take a hard stance against god modding. As it stands, Matheson seems to be a man who is very proficient in combat, magic and crafting enchanting items. This on its own can get out of hand, but he also has a magical item that he made himself that allows him to see cursed/diseased people, diagnose, find weaknesses in items, etc. It is very easy to have something like this quickly become OP or God Moddy in rp, so be mindful on how/when it's used and any attempt of anything on other characters needs to be an attempt.

So, I am approving this on the condition that you are mindful on how to avoid OP or God Modding with him.

I certainly understand your concerns and I did my best to limit what was my attempt to put his in-game capabilities into an RP context. Since I haven't RPd with anyone beyond casual conversation, I was unsure as to what "power level" everyone's characters operated with.

I can assure you that Matheson isn't Batman and cannot produce a magical item on a whim to deal with any situation. The Deepsight Pearl took years to craft. My intention for that particular trait was to allow for certain story hooks- like the research for, tracking of, and obtaining special materials and reagents.

As for being a competent warrior and mage, this too was an attempt to explain in-game mechanics and I limited his magical abilities to the restoration school. I don't treat restoration/healing as an instant fix in which one snaps their fingers and all wounds and afflictions disappear, nor do I use it to heal my own characters' wounds immediately when he is getting bested in combat. Healing is done after a fight (or during if he disengages from the conflict to tend to the wounded if at all possible), takes considerable effort and concentration, and is by no means guaranteed to work.

Hopefully this alleviates any concerns you or anyone else might have as to my RP style. I assure you that my intention is not to "win", be the center of attention, or be the hero of every story.
