Character Name: Dantalius
Race: Redguard
Age: 30
Sex: Male
Marital Status: Single
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Affliction: None
Physical Description: Dantalius is a rather large Redguard, with bronze skin and relatively atypical red hair. His face is unmarred, but his muscular body is rife with scars and bruises, souvenirs of his life as a soldier. Dantalius keeps his head mostly shaved, save for thick patch of dreadlocks kept tied back from his face. He has piercing green eyes.
Flairs: Dantalius is a disciplined man, and cares for his gear. No matter it's age, it is always in good repair and clean, unless in active use. Dantalius also carries with him a curious box. Inside are dozens, if not hundreds, of buttons, taken from shirts and coats.
Personality: Dantalius is, most of the time, fairly stoic. He seems far older than his years, worn down as he is by the weight of experience. He does, however, possess a wry sense of humor, though he saves his wit for those who he knows well and likes. Dantalius has no patience for the craven, or for deserters; if you will not stand and fight for your allies, you are the lowest of the low in his eyes.
Dantalius distracts himself by pursuing singing. He has a surprisingly excellent tenor voice, and the brightness of music is something that helps get him through the day. He is also an avid reader and a cunning strategist, either on the field of battle or in the halls of power (though he's been far away from the latter for quite some time). Dantalius is an avid reader, possessing a great deal of knowledge on a wide variety of subjects, and enjoys conversations with like-minded folk. Though he is not a heavy drinker, Dantalius does have a soft spot for wine, and in fact makes his own.
Dantalius is a powerful warrior, a veteran of war, though he no longer supports it. Most of his experience comes fighting other mortals; he is quite new to this whole business with the Daedra, and it fills him with unease.
Why is your character in Dominion territory? How did they get here?
After becoming disillusioned with the war, Dantalius decided that he would see the world. He had spent his entire life with his people, and after fighting and bleeding and suffering for them, he found the world no better than before, and he found himself no happier. Dantalius decided to travel to the lands of the people he fought, to better understand them and to better understand himself...and hopefully to win a measure of peace.
Background
Sentinel is not a place for the weak. You win, or you die. That was the way of things, and the only life that Dantalius knew. Dantalius' parents were both warriors; they served Sentinel faithfully, and Dantalius had never made plans to be anything but a soldier. He payed attention to his schooling because he knew that it was better to fight smart than fight hard, though he could certainly do the latter. He impressed his trainers at every turn, displaying the ability to wield any weapon or wear any armor with almost universal aptitude. When he was old enough, he decided to join the army.
Then he experienced ten years of hell.
Dantalius joined the army proper when the Daggerfall Covenant was forged. He believed in what he was doing, and his skill ensured his assignment to elite units. Time after time, Dantalius and his comrades were sent into the thickest fighting, or to perform a suicidal rear-guard to cover an escape.
Time after time, Dantalius was wounded, but did not die.
Time after time, his comrades were slain instead.
Dantalius took to collecting the buttons of his fallen comrades. He simply wanted something to remember them by. He did not want to take anything truly noteworthy; that, of course, was for their families. But Dantalius wanted something to remind him of their bond.
After a decade of this, of countless medals and honors, of grievous wounds and long convalescence, Dantalius' unit was ordered to assault the enemy. Altmer from the Dominion had taken one of the Covenant's stronholds in contested land, and Dantalius' unit were to liberate it.
Only, there was no reason.
The stronghold was not in a strategically significant location. The Covenant had managed to remove their supplies and forces from the location with little loss due to their scouts detecting the assault early. Simply put, it would be a waste of time, energy, and lives. Dantalius said this to his commander, who only sneered at the younger man.
Apparently, any inch of ground yielded to the enemy was a defeat, an affront to the pride of the Covenant, and would not stand.
It was for this pride that every single member of Dantalius' unit, save for himself, was slaughtered.
The Altmer put up a hellacious fight, but Dantalius was victorious. At the end, the Altmer commander was at his mercy.
Dantalius let him go.
After all, what was the point? Most of the people he'd cared about lay dead around him, and in his foe's eyes, he saw the same tired resignation that he had been trying to ignore in the mirror for years.
Dantalius took his companion's buttons, reported his "success", and promptly resigned his commission.
That was five years ago.
Dantalius has spent a long time healing, both physically and mentally. He's not there, yet, but he wants to understand what would drive nations to war. He wants to reach some sort of closure about the lives he has taken, and the lives he could not save. And if in so doing he's able to assist the world become whole once more, in some small way, well...all the better.
