Decent shot with a bow. Hopelessly inept with magic. Can pick locks well enough, but does not have the skill or discretion of a talented thief. A master brewer with a recipe for mulled wine that is has no equal, and an excellent cook.

When he was hardly more than a cub, his father left on a routine trip and never returned, leaving him to shoulder the burden of supporting his mother. Irritated with her lackadaisical attitude and the harsh conditions of the moon sugar plantation he worked on, the young Khajiit left to find his fortune on the high seas.
When the trading vessel he worked aboard was boarded and seized by raiders, Mai'Yahr was one of the few crew members left alive. Suffering from a bad fall from halfway up the mast and in dire condition, he was taken captive and confined in a small holding bay with several other Khajiit and Argonians to be sold into slavery.
Mai'Yahr's time in servitude was a definitive point in his life. He had the good fortune to be bought by the Lord of the Vien House of Hew's Bane. The fad among members of the young nobility was "pet" attendants - servants who were expected to spend the entirety of their time with their masters, seeing to their every need while being fawned over like a prize hound. The Khajiit continued to serve the young lord even after the trend ran its course, becoming a staple member of the manor and even earning the trust to train and serve as his master's personal bodyguard. Rumors of an illicit relationship between the two circulated, but these were largely put to rest when the young noble reached an appropriate age to take his vows and consummate an arranged marriage that had been decided in his childhood. To all appearances, he was enamored with his new wife and the whispers of how he spent his time with his Khajiit attendant faded into the background.
Mai'Yahr earned his title, "the ill-fortuned" after a particularly dire turn of events. For reasons unknown, he abandoned the house he had served for so many years, slipping beneath the iron grip the less than honorable Master of House Vien maintained over the city of Abah's Landing. The Khajiit left a long and bloody trail in the wake of his escape, and he is believed to be responsible for the slaughter of a traveling caravan of his own kind as well as a party of Vien guardsmen sent to retrieve him. Among the dead he left behind was his oldest and closest friend, enforcing his reputation as a cold-blooded murderer.
Time has dulled the impact of his actions. House Vien has fallen into debt and disarray over the years along with the manhunt they maintained, and it's rumored that the elusive Khajiit paid off his own bounty and is still at large to this day. A hired guard with his likeness has been seen from time to time in Rawl'kha in Reaper's March, but if the local officials have noticed any similarities between the amicable Khajiit and the known murderer, they have kept silent.
