Character Name: Darcastan
Race: Altmer
Age: 55 (pretty young, really, assuming we're going with the lore that Altmer can live to 200/300 years old)
Sex: Male
Affliction: None
Marital Status: Single
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Physical Description: (On the job and casual appearance)

Personality: Darcastan is an good-natured person who approaches the world with curiosity and vigour. He is more likely to diffuse a fight than start one, and tries to approach all situations, no matter how dire, with a degree of humour (which people either love or hate him for). He enjoys teasing others, but never about something they are sensitive about or cannot change. Being adventurous, he finds staying in one place unnatural, and can become restless and irritable if confined for too long. In terms of interaction with others, he’ll give anyone a chance – even a second one – but never a third. Talk of magical theory will put him into a coma. Overall, he is a reasonably open and extroverted person, and there are only a few sensitive topics that will see him withdraw from conversation or otherwise close up. Will talk for hours about where he’d been and what he has done, and is not shy about (most) of his failures. He is far more likely to be frustrated with himself than other people.
Likes: Ruins, dungeons (the exploring kind, not the prison kind), artefacts, empathetic people, curiosity, coin, warm baths, swimming, drinking, animals that are not trying to eat him. Likes exploring harsh terrains, especially cold environments like Wrothgar. Enjoys fishing as a way to wind down after a long day. Is very protective of his horse (Duchess) and hound (Allira).
Dislikes: Scholars, studying, being treated as inferior, has recently developed a phobia of fire (a torch is okay, but large or uncontrolled flames are not), cowards, unnecessary cruelty, animal cruelty, mishandling of artefacts and relics, being called a grave robber, bigotry/racism, obvious failure (on his part - basically the kind of failure he can't spin into a fun or didactic story).
Strengths: Very adaptable and able to think fast on his feet, even in life-threatening situations. Strong general survival skills from years spent outdoors. Magical ability is enough to keep him alive, but he couldn’t face a fully trained mage in anything close to a fair fight. Animals tend to like him (provided they aren't very hungry or rabid). Can pick simple locks and disarm any simple to moderate traps (arcane and mundane). Has developed the 'gift of the gab' from negotiating contracts for most of his life. Focuses mostly on defensive and survival-based magic (detecting enemies, shielding himself, etc.).
Weaknesses: Hand-to-hand combat (or close-combat in general). He will try to disengage, gain distance, or fight dirty to get out of it. Complex traps or cursed relics (his track-record isn't as good as it used to be). At times, his pride can get the best of him (an unfortunate side-effect of his Altmer heritage - or so he claims), leading to reckless decisions. While he can take most jokes on the chin, there are a few topics he is sensitive about. Currently has ongoing (but decreasing) pain from his burns that vary depending on weather and activity. Has developed a phobia of uncontained/uncontrolled fire (the kind his staff or a torch produces is okay, but anything unexpected or out of his control affects him).
Background:
Born in Summerset, Darcastan was raised by his mother, Telandare, who was a high-ranking member of the Mage’s Guild. Throughout his early years, she would test him often, trying to ascertain whether he had any notable skill in the arcane arts. When he eventually proved he did at nine years old, she immediately enrolled him with the guild to begin basic lessons, and most of his time at home was spent studying under her watchful gaze. Naturally, he grew to resent this very quickly.
After his increasingly rebellious teenage years, at the age of twenty he decided he’d had enough. Still a child by Altmer standards, he left the Mage’s Guild and home all at once, upending his life. The change was triggered after the guild sent him on a mission to retrieve a relic from a Velothi crypt. With a passion for adventure freshly ignited, he realised what he wanted to do with his life, and quickly determined the only way to pursue it without losing his mind was to remove himself from the bureaucracy of the Mage’s Guild. So, he became a private relic hunter, specialising in acquisitions, charging next to nothing for the chance to explore the world on another person’s dime. At first, he barely covered expenses, but as he became more well-known, he built up a client base that didn’t mind paying more for a reliable service.
While extensively well-travelled, Darcastan has a laughable knack for knowing a region’s caves and ruins intimately while being utterly at a loss about features of the capital city. He makes many acquaintances, but few friends, with his lifestyle meaning he rarely stays in one place for long. His most loyal companions are his hound, Allira, and his somewhat supercilious mare, Duchess. In terms of people, he is more likely to befriend wanderers, mercenaries, and other skill-for-hire individuals. One of his regular clients – an Imperial woman living in Summerset - is probably the closest thing he has to a friend, but even then, their relationship remains predominantly professional. He occasionally rents a room in her villa. It is also where he recently spent a month recovering from severe injuries before feeling stifled and leaving for Auridon to hopefully complete the process in the nice, quiet town of Shattered Grove...
