Born into a working class family, he developed an early talent at magicka at the foot of his mother whom despite being of low station was a mage of some power. As he progressed in power he saw that his mother could have been a sorceress of awesome power but allowed herself to be held back from her potential due to her love of his father, a simple carpenter. He began to resent his father to being too "common" and poor to nurture the gifts the divines had seen fit to bestow upon his mother and him. In his youth he equated magical power with influence, and influence with wealth. Eventually his desire for power to elevate his family's station so as to give his mother/mentor everything his "failure" of a father could not over reached. He willingly made a dark bargain so that he could lift his magicka to the heights of greatness. Upon his return with his new found power saw that he was kissed by darkness and was appalled.
Now recognizing the blind ambition in there son, and the unspeakable lengths he would go to for power; them banished him from their home and disowned him.

Mephìstopheles - actively works to be liked by those around him but does so for selfish reasons. He chooses his words carefully to suit whomever he is engaged. While he is calculating , he is usually willing to aid others but will keep score in order to "collect" at a later date. Personal power, wealth, and influence are his primary motivations but is savvy enough to endeavor to conceal his baser motivations.
